Description

Certified as a Master Bladesmith by the American Bladesmith Society, Bob Kramer is one of the only Master Bladesmiths in the world specializing in kitchen cutlery. Cook’s Illustrated once wrote: “The Kramer knife outperformed every knife we’ve ever rated.” Put simply, Kramer is King of the Kitchen Knife. Saveur dubbed Bob “The Master of the Blade.”

For this exclusive collection, Sur La Table worked with the master himself—along with renowned German knife maker Zwilling J.A. Henckels—to create an exquisite line of artisan knives designed by Bob and crafted to his exacting specifications.

The paring knife is ideal for peeling, dicing, and small tasks like de-veining shrimp, removing seeds from peppers, creating decorative garnishes, and much more. Hand wash. 3½" blade. Limited lifetime warranty. Handcrafted in Seki City, Japan, exclusively for Sur La Table®.

A steal for a Bob Kramer quality knife
For those looking to start out with a good knife set, you don't need to start out with a set of 7-20 knives. The more you use knives, the more you'll find that you gravitate to just a few types of knives. There are 3 that I think a person really needs:

1.) They need a good chef's knife of 8-12 inches in length. Most like an 8 inch knife since they tend to feel the most comfortable to hold. A 6 inch is too short for many things. Many cooks will use a 10 inch. This gives you a longer cutting edge and also reduces the angle you have to bend your wrist, but some find the extra length a little unwieldly. It isn't so unwieldly after you get used to it though. Chef Jacques Ppin (known for cooking with Julia Child) recommends and uses a 12 inch knife. These are harder to find and some equate them to a sword, but after I got accustomed to longer knives I see his affinity for the 12 inch knife.

2.) They need a good paring knife. These normally range from 3.25"" to 4.5"". In some situations a longer one works better and in others a shorter one does. If you have a really sharp one the shorter knife is the better to get. This is probably the knife that people use most unless the chef's knife gets used more.

3.) Lastly, a good serrated knife comes in handy. They are great for cutting vegetables and bread but are more limited in their use than the first two.

My point is this. Instead of buying a cheaper expensive set, start out with 2-3 really good quality knives like this one.

To me, this knife is a steal. It is easily one of the knives you'll use the most in the kitchen. And due to the small size of the blade it is half the price of an expensive chef's knife. This knife has an edge on it that is extremely sharp. If I could go back and pick the first knife I bought to add to my kitchen collection, this would be it.

When I cut up an apple with even a Wusthof or Classic Henckel knife you have to exert a little pressure and sawing. This Damascus blade knife just glides right through them. And when you are cutting a lot of things, that makes a HUGE difference.

Focus on getting really good quality for the knives you use most. You don't need a lot of knives, just a few really good ones. This a really good one that you'll use a lot at a descent price for the amount you'll use it

I thought I would get my son some knives that were not chefs knives. I think a good paring knife is invaluable and the utility knife will have so many uses, too. Maybe I'll get him a chef's knife next time.
