OXO began with a simple question. Why do ordinary kitchen tools hurt your hands? OXO set out to create a line of kitchen tools that would be comfortable to hold and easy to use. Today OXO offers more than 500 ergonomic products with pressure-absorbing, comfort-grip handles.
The grated side of the tongs has nothing solid in it at all, so it flexes... a lot, which leads to a severe loss in its ability to pick things up.
Once grease is involved, it becomes almost impossible to pick up even the smallest lightest things. Even grilled hot dogs caused the all silicone to flex enough that lifting them off the grill became a chore of trying to get the hot dog onto the solid tong, and twisting it around.
The grated grip is great in concept, but poorly executed in silicone.
All that being said, the pinching action and lock both work well, and it's very easy to clean.
I consider a set of silicone tongs to be essential equipment in the kitchen (more important than steel tipped tongs because the number places that steel can go but silicone cannot is really small, but the converse isn't true.)
These tongs from OXO have a great combination/intersection of form/function/value/ergonomic
