Not sure what to make of it
When my Le Creuset braiser was lost during a recent move, (and yes, I cried) I was looking for an alternative that was a bit more economical, as I am vegetarian now, and rarely use a braiser these days.

This braiser was on sale, (at a very good price), and being Sur La Table, I was confident when ordering it. Unfortunately, I am not sure what to make of my new purchase.

The description said it had a black enamel interior, and did not require seasoning, so I assumed the interior was much like my Le Creuset, (in effect, non-stick). However, when I received it, I noticed that it is very rough on the inside, (like fine sandpaper) and the instructions that came with it, state you must completely dry it to prevent rust. Hmmmmm.....never had an enamel coated pan that rusted if you didn't dry it! It immediately made me wonder about the interior coating, particularly since it states not to use a scouring pad or detergent.

After using it the first time, I can definitely state that it is NOT non-stick, and while fine for soup or something that has a lot of liquid, using this to braise with a small amount of liquid ended with a difficult cleanup. I also worry about acidic liquids on the interior of this braiser. Not feeling very confident about using a tomato-based liquid at all.

The care instructions are almost identical to non-seasoned cast iron, yet you are specifically told NOT to season it, and it's definitely not coated with a traditional enamel, so I guess only time will tell how it holds up. Although the workmanship appears decent, I really wish it was either regular cast iron, or true enamel coated, instead of this weird hybrid product. Luckily, it was purchased on sale

Very Good Value
I bought this on sale and I admit I was skeptical of the matte black interior. But in comparison to my Le Creuset, I have to admit the matte black browns meat better than non black--something to do with absorption of light, I think? I have seared and braised in this multiple times. The interior cleans well, and the finish on this is beautiful and bright. I'm glad I got this and not the LC brasier at 5x the price. With this said, I did find a tiny perforation in the exterior enamel that did not affect the interior cooking. SLT is sending a new one though, and gave me no problems. In the meantime, I have to say I've missed seeing it on my stovetop and have missed cooking with it

Good alternative to more expensive cast iron
I've been wanting a cast iron pan for quite some time, but most of them are not within my budget. When I saw this one on sale I got very excited. I honestly thought it would be non-stick, but that is most definitely not the case. But as long as you use cooking spray or oil you'll be okay. It's very quick cooking so be careful. Things will burn.

Good value for the $, but I think I wish I would have waiting for the real deal

outstanding braiser
I received this as a gift. It's my second cast iron from Sur la Table and I absolutely LOVE the quality. This is the perfect size for just about anything you want to make. I did a full pot roast dinner and vegetables in this last weekend.
The pot is not too heavy. I also have the 8 qt, which is large, so it's nice to have a little bit smaller option.
It's very much worth the price as the quality cannot be beat.
One thing I loved, it cleans like a dream.... just make sure (as with any cast iron) that it's fully dry before you put it away to avoid any rust. this just might be the perfect pot

Great piece of cookware
I received an 8 qt. as a gift, and wanted a smaller piece as well. The 5 qt. is a great size (and was at a great price).

I used it to cook gumbo and it was perfect. It heated evenly and stayed at the ideal simmer needed to slow cook a gumbo.

Most importantly it cleaned up easily. It will definitely be my ""go to"" pot
