Fast heating Belgian perfection
We have been waiting for this Croqade Fri Fri maker to be sold in the the USA. It is a quality made waffle maker from Belgium, that has two heating elements, is super easy to change plates from Belgian to regular flat waffles and for cleaning, well designed. No sticking, easy to flip, waffles come out and look like magnificent. Looking forward to many years of use from this fine appliance.

Waffle Perfection
Waffles are evenly cooked to perfection and it could not be easier to use! Nothing sticks to this thing so clean up is so much easier than the other models I have tried. Once you get the hang of changing the plates it is really easy. And it is the perfect size for one or two people. Well worth the investment.

Best Waffle Iron ever!
I have used, but never owned many waffle irons over the years. I am so glad I waited for this one! The iron is compact, versatile and cooks to perfection, just like the restaurant quality one I used as a teenager.

I have limited space in my kitchen, so I need something that can do double or even triple duty. Well, I have found it! The variety of additional plates you can purchase for one single appliance is not only a space saver, but a money saver. I can have homemade waffle cones for ice-cream, stuffed waffles, Belgian waffles, traditional waffles and Panini like sandwiches all from the same iron! All I have to do is store the plates, which are small compared to multiple irons.

This thing has not been put away yet! I am using it every weekend. I even made my own Belgian waffles following a recipe on the back of the sugar pearls I got at Sur La Table.

Amazing!
I love waffles! But I've donated quite a few waffle makers to thrift shops because they did not work. I decided that I wanted some waffles tonight, but then felt guilty because I'm watching my weight. I found a low fat waffle recipe on line and tried it. I was really worried that it would stick to this waffle iron. Miraculously, my waffles floated off this iron. Flipping the iron more than once during the cooking process seemed to make them more likely to leave the iron with only the help of a silicon spatula. I plan on buying some additional plates to make waffles with smaller indentations. Pricey, but the best electric waffle iron ever.

Belgian waffles!!
Love it! Made batter waffles with the Belgian waffle plate.

The process of making them brought back memories of the Belgian waffle stand at the 1964 NYC World's Fair and watching the waffles being made. Those waffles were rectangular, just like my batter waffles. Wonder if making them rectangular was a concession to American perception of waffles?

It did take me a bit to figure out what was supposed to slide to remove the plates.

Just bought another plate and hope to add more plates in the future.

Great investment. Looking forward to many years of waffles.

Delicious waffles are easy to make!
This product is fantastic. Easy to clean. Easy to prepare. Makes a gigantic, deep Belgian waffle, and offers the only stuffed waffle plate I've seen. I've asked them to add plates for waffle sticks and hong kong style egg waffles because this is the only waffle maker I want to use for anything now. Can't wait to afford more plates. Note that this item is eligible for discounts when there is a 20%-off-one-item sale. Out of 4 weekend days since purchasing this waffle maker, we've made waffles all 4 -- and multiple waffles every day, per person at that. They are that good! And I haven't even used this for the Liege style waffles yet. Can't wait for that. In the meantime, I will save up for other plates. Honestly, if you can afford a Breville or similar, just get this one. Way more versatile, and the waffles are outstanding.

Perfection!
I've used this a few times now and only have good things to say: I love that it's made in Belgium; the overall design is wonderful; and the waffles come out perfectly. My mom made waffles every weekend when I was a kid, and I look forward to carrying on that tradition now that I've finally found an iron worth splurging on. I never thought I'd find one that wasn't made in China--thank you, Sur la Table! This was a lovely Christmas gift.

Changeable, removable plates, excellent reviews and delicious pictures on multiple sites, ability to return if I'm not satisfied with it, manufacturer pretty much makes nothing but this device.

The accessory plates available for separate purchase ARE MADE IN CHINA!!! Are the plates that come standard with the waffle iron also made in China? Are only the "electrics" and other outside parts made in Belgium? This is very confusing, and could mis-lead someone to think they are purchasing a food-contact item not from China, when in fact that may not be the case. Please confirm with the manufacturer the country of manufacture of the iron plates that ship with the waffle iron unit. I want NON-CHINESE materials, especially at such high heat. Please confirm and post for concerned consumers. Thank you.

Best Answer: I am sure that most of the parts including plates are made in China and made in Belgium is just a marketing gimmick to make you pay more for it.

About the Croquade Waffle Maker, which waffle plates does it actually come with of those shown in the picture? It's unclear from the description. It would be helpful to have a picture of only those plates just to clarify which it comes with.

Thank you.

how easy is it to clean? Are the "improvements" for the better vs. the older traditional models.
susan on Sep 14, 2014
Best Answer: It is easy to clean after initial oiling. A wipe with a hot wet paper towel is all that is required. Should you need or desire to remove the plates for washing, they come off easily and you may use a dime coin as a screwdriver, just be sure that the unit has cooled off as the plates and screws get dangerously hot. If you over clean the plates, re-oiling will be needed on the subsequent use.

Best Answer: A few major benefits of the Croquade are that it's made in Belgium and has multiple interchangeable plates. It also has a 2 year warranty.
Some benefits of the KitchenAid are that it has a countdown time, a preheat indicator light & an auto shutoff.

Can I use any waffle mix with this, or is this strictly for Liege waffle dough?
A shopper on Sep 26, 2014
Best Answer: I use conventional waffle mix and homemade mix. Both make delicious waffles. It is a great waffle maker that I use at least 2 or 3 times a week. Pricey but great!

I've been making Liege waffles recently. I have been having a problem with the sugar from the previous waffle burning on the next waffle. When I try to wipe the excess sugar off between waffles, it causes tiny blemishes in the nonstick coating due to the graininess of the partially melted sugar. I'm afraid that if I keep making Liege yeast waffles (as opposed to American batter waffles) I will wear out the nonstick coating. I looked at the Croquade web site. It looks like there is a cast iron version of the waffle plate available in Europe. It appears that cast iron is more suited to making Liege waffles. Any chance Sur La Table can import some of the cast iron traditional plates? I would pay the extra cost. I also prefer non-aluminum products.
Mary D D on Feb 16, 2015
Best Answer: Update. I e-mailed the company. Even the European plates are now aluminum. Not sure if I was reading the description of a discontinued product, or if there was a typo. It seems that cast iron waffle plates are only made for professionals. But I would pay more for a consumer item if it had cast iron plates.

The photo shows perfectly round galettes. How do you get those from rectangular plates?
Peggy W on Dec 10, 2014
Best Answer: I just rec'd this product in the mail but believe the waffle dough balls are simply pressed out which results in a baked waffle in the form of a circle. I hope that makes sense!

Are these waffles really crisp on the outside (apart from using the sugar)?
Peggy W on Dec 10, 2014
Best Answer: The waffles come out very crisp if you use the regular (NOT fine) galette plate and the Waffle House clone recipe from the Todd Wilbur web site. I own all of the plates for this waffle iron, and this plate, made for baking waffle style cookie galettes, is the only one that consistently makes crisp waffes right out of the iron. The other plates make softer waffles that usually need to be crisped in the oven or toaster--but I admit that I haven't experimented with every temperature setting and I haven't tried a boxed mix. And of course the Liege waffles have always come out perfectly using temperature setting 7 1/2. Nice crispy sugar coating.

Does it have a timer or auto shut off when this waffle maker machine senses the waffle is finished? I want an old fashioned waffle maker that allows me to cook the waffle as long as I want. I don't want a sensor on it. I have an awesome bean, old, vegan waffle recipe that requires the waffle to be cooked 8 minutes without peeking. The older waffle makers allowed this. The new, so called modern waffle makers do not allow this from what I've seen. I anxiously look forward to your answer..
Carole D on Dec 10, 2014
Best Answer: No, this one doesn't have an auto shut off or time. It is the definition of old fashioned.

Hi. I recently purchased this waffle maker, but I can't figure out how to remove the plates to wash them. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I missing something really obvious? Thanks in advance!
A shopper on Feb 3, 2015
Best Answer: Remove the 2 screws at the back of the grids next to the hinge. Then, slide the covers over the pins holding the plates to the iron. Then you will be able to put the plates in your dishwasher. Good luck. It took me a while to find the covers over the pins to clean my waffle maker.

Followed directions but could not get center of waffle to cook. Came out doughy. Has anyone had this problem?
A shopper on Dec 28, 2014
Best Answer: The first waffle that I made came out undercooked. Then I realized that I had to turn the temperature up! I turned it up to 7 and cooked perfect batter waffles. Sounds like a hassle, but it is actually an advantage of this waffle iron. Different waffles require different temperatures. Thinner waffles can take a lower temperature--and you can change the plates to change your waffle thickness. Also, different recipes have different water and fat contents, requiring different temperatures and cooking times. It only takes one or two waffles to figure out what temperature/what time is required for your recipe. I have also learned to check my waffles when the steam slows down in batter waffles. Also, remember Julia Child's famous rule--any food is almost done when you start to smell its aroma. This rule has saved me in all my years of multiple moves with multiple stoves. After all, French cuisine was invented when people used wood for a cooking fuel and thermostats and timers were nonexistent!

It makes amazing waffles because of the wattage...
