Great Machine, poor Carafe
I have tried different coffee machine and this one stands out among them in terms of easiness, small foot print, brewing time, and temperature of freshly brewed coffee.
The only issue I have had with this BV1900 model is in the carafe. The carafe does not keep the coffee hot, not even for 20 minutes. The carafe gets really hot from the outside, which indicates poor insulation from the inside.

Fast and delicious coffee.
Great improvement over the previous 1800 model, with stainless lined carafe and basket style filter. Also seems to make stronger coffee with better saturation of grounds. Enjoy!

Great Basic Coffeemaker
Great basic coffeemaker. Improved over the previous model with stainles steel lined carafe over the glass. Coffee is steaming when I remove it from the maker to put on the lid, and remains hot in the carafe

Best Coffee Maker I've Owned
Quality design. 8 cups is perfect per pot. Thermal carafe keeps coffee hot, and fresh for up to 2 hours. Brews better coffee than any other system Ive had in the past. It is worth the money for this coffee maker.

Great coffee but carafe doesn't keep it hot
This is the best coffee that I have made. I love the simplicity of the machine and how quickly it makes coffee. I have to use an old carafe to keep it hot if we will be drinking coffee for more than an hour or so even though I heat it with boiling water. Very disappointing.

Great coffee, carafe needs better insulation
This makes the best coffee I've ever had out of a machine; in fact, it's just as good as the pourover stuff we've made at home. The carafe pours well and you can get every last drop out (unusual for the metal carafes I've previously had).

As many people have stated, the carafe does not keep things hot for long. This isn't a problem for us as we finish off the coffee in the pot within an hour, but if you're looking for something to keep this warm all day you'll need to move it into a Thermos.

So Far So Good
My husband asked for this coffee pot for Christmas…he loves his coffee and read that this pot made a great cup. The first thing I noticed when I drank my first cup was there was absolutely no bitterness to the coffee…smooth and hot. The only thing about the coffee pot is that it makes 8 cups at a time - about 3 large cups of what we drink. This is really enough but it means you make coffee more often if you are a big coffee drinker.

Actually had expected better
Since you asked for a review I have not be pleased with the coffee maker. I had expected a very good cup of coffee. So far I haven't gotten one. Maybe I still need to make some adjustments. The carafe is very heavy. Don't like having to switch funnel with carafe top after brewing. I am considering returning the product.

Fast and efficient, even for one cup.
I've been using this coffee maker for a couple of weeks now. I find it to be fast, well-designed, and easy to clean.
One of the great features is the option to "bloom" the coffee before running the water through it. The machine gives the dry grounds a quick shot of hot water, and then lets them sit for a minute to saturate. Great feature, especially if you're just making a cup. It makes for an efficient extraction.
One important tip: This coffee maker uses the Melitta flat-bottomed filter, rather than a cone filter, so the hot water runs through the grounds very quickly. I learned to set my grinder to the finest possible grind, and have gotten excellent results.

Great brewer
I am a coffee home roaster and was looking for an SCAA approved drip brewer that would brew at the correct temperate and had a bloom feature. The Bonavita 1900 fit my requirements at a reasonable price. In my experience with the carafe pre-heated with boiling water, it keeps the brewed coffee very hot for at least an hour after brewing. My only issue was the effort it took to get rid of the plastic taste and odor. The instructions recommend brewing plain water twice before brewing coffee. Even after 10 plain water brew cycles, I could smell and taste plastic in the water. I finally figured out the source of the plastic smell was from the water reservoir. After brewing with water I left the top open over night and the plastic smell was much less in the morning. I did a couple of more water brew cycles during the day, leaving the reservoir top open after each one. I left the top open overnight again and in the morning the water brew tasted the same as our filtered water. With the plastic taste gone, we did a blind taste test of the Bonativa vs. outr old drip brewer and both my wife and myself chose the Bonitva coffee as having more flavor and complexity and a smoother taste. After a month we are still very happy with our brewer and hope for years of good service ahead.

Is this the model BV1900TS, (the coffeemaker that has earned SCAA rating)?
A shopper on Oct 18, 2014
BEST ANSWER: That answer makes no sense because Bonavita does not make a model 53095. It appears that the SKU# is being confused with the model number.
In fact, if you go to their web site the only NEW model they have is the BV1900ts. Also, in the description of thie product on this page it clearly states that it has the SCAA certification. Hope this is helpful
I've noticed on my Bonavita BV1900TS that the liter measuring marks seem to be really inaccurate. The one liter mark, for example, is actually around .7 or .8 liters. Has anyone else noticed this problem, or did I just get a bad unit?
Stephen C on May 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I agree. The bonavita measure is not accurate. I use my own measuring device.
How long should you wait after making one pot before starting on a second pot with this coffeemaker?
David B on Jan 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Ai think the directions say 5 minutes.

BEST ANSWER: It says stainless steel.
Is this model 1900TS?
A shopper on Oct 21, 2014
Does it have a timer on it? Can I set it so it will be brewed when I get up in the morning?
A shopper on Dec 26, 2014
BEST ANSWER: No, it does not have a timer.
Does this model have a stop and pour feature while brewing?
A shopper on Nov 30, 2014
BEST ANSWER: No it does not. But remember that it brews much faster than typical makers. About 5 minutes.
What is the Bonavita model number for this coffee maker? There is no model 53095 on the Bonavita website. Please correct this information. I would like to buy the 1900ts model. Bonavita does not make a 53095 model. This misinformation is preventing sur la table from making sales!
Lisa on Oct 27, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The Bonavita 53095 is the BV1900TS. This information will not be changed on our website, as 53095 is the model number Bonavita provided to us.
Is the plastic basket BPA free?
A shopper on Feb 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes. From the manufacturer's website: "Carafe lid, filter basket, and showerhead are dishwasher safe and all plastic is BPA-free".
What kind of paper filters does this take?
T B on Dec 2, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The flat bottom 8-12 cup type. A packet of 50 is included (Melitta)
Can I make a less than a full pot of coffee? I only need 3 cups of coffee in the morning.
A shopper on Feb 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes. The direction say you can make a minimum of 4 cups; each "cup" seems be about 4 ounces, which translates to about 2 normal coffee mugs.
How does the optional pre-infusion mode work? Can you select it or not select it?
A shopper on Jan 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes you can. Very easy. Just hold down the power button for 5 seconds. However, I just leave it on and love it.
I own this machine and would like comments on what type of grind you are using and also how much per 6-8 oz cup of grounds you are putting in. I know this is very subjective as to each ones tastes but would like to know what you've found to be perfect for YOU? which would help give me a starting point to find my own perfect cup. Thanks
Elana W on Jun 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Elana, you are so correct with personal preferences, but I will try to help lay the groundwork. I measure everything in grams with scale.

First off, the type & brand/model of grinder you have will determine some parameters for sure. A very popular coffee grinder is the Baratza Encore Grinder. I use the Breville Smart Grinder BCG800XL which is also a very good quality grinder for the home. Both use burr grinder blades and will provide you with some "consistency" in your grinds.

You have two ways of going about your grinds:

1) Visual/Feel after the beans have been ground. Strive for a coarse sea salt texture for drip coffee.

2) Depending on your grinder, there are reference points, notches, clicks, numbers, etc on the grinder. Use these as well to get dialed in.

On my Bonavita, here is the ratio of coffee grinds to water I am using:

1:16 or 1.16:6

In other words, for each gram of ground up coffee, I add 16.6 grams of fresh clean filtered water. You can play with this ratio. Start out with a 1:15, 1:16, 1:16.6, and/or 1:17 ratio of coffee to water. Find your sweet spot and perfect your technique!

So again, here is my set-up for almost full pot of coffee:
1:16.6 will look like this...... 62.24 grams of ground coffee x 16.6 grams water = 1000 ML water (aka brewed coffee)

Oh yea, please get a kitchen scale if you don't already have one. This makes all the difference. Also, rinse your paper filter out with clean water before adding coffee grounds to the basket. After you flip the switch to brew the coffee, listen carefully for the water to quirt into the basket at least 3-4 times. Immediately flip the switch "off" for 30-45 seconds to allow the coffee to "bloom" or rise up like a cake baking in the oven. This will de-gas your coffee and produce a better, cleaner cup. After the 30-45 second bloom, flip the switch back on and let the coffee finish brewing.

-Bonavita Drip machine
-Conical Burr Coffee Grinder
-Kitchen Scale
-Digital Timer
-Clean Filtered Water
How long is the electrical cord? I read where someone stated that it was very short.
Ray K on Dec 1, 2014
BEST ANSWER: It is short but I love that, less mess on your counter...if it works for you. 26" including the plug. Brews awesome coffee and it so streamlined and simple.
Bonita confirmed that the the brewer marked 53095 on this site is indeed the BV1900TS. The site erroneously states that it uses a 1400-watt thermal block heater. Bonavita says it's a 1500-watt heater and that they were going to ask Sur la table to correct. Has anyone gotten this model from Sur la table and can confirm the 1500-watt spec? Thanks!
Marc W on Nov 19, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The BV1900TS pictured is indeed a 1500-watt heater. I saved the manufacturer's original carton from my coffee maker, and 1500 watts is clearly stated on the box. I've been enjoying wonderfully-hot coffee since the product arrived mid-Nov 2014.
I bought this coffee maker and loved it - until I had to clean it. I had to push the 'on' button a number of times to complete the cycle and finally it would not even catch. A lot of money for a few months use! What is proper procedure to clean?
A shopper on Oct 1, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Here's what the owner's manual states for cleaning:

We recommend that you descale your brewer after every 100 brew cycles, or once every three months. However, if the brewer makes an unusually loud noise, extends brew time, or fails to achieve the recommended water temperature of 195°-205°F (91°-96°C), you may need to descale more often.

We recommend using Full Circle descaling powder, which is designed to break down mineral build-up inside your brewer to ensure great coffee and consistent functionality. Do not use vinegar, which may not effectively descale your brewer, and may leave behind an odor that can impact the flavor of your coffee.

1. Mix 1 packet coffee machine cleaning powder with 32 oz of lukewarm water
2. Pour into tank
3. Brew
4. Brew two more times with fresh, cold water

What were you using to clean it? Sounds like your machine might be defective so I would reach out to Bonavita for assistance. There is a two year limited warranty.

Good luck.
We have an older model Bonavita with a glass carafe. Can we purchase a separate stainless steel carafe? Will it work the older model setup?
Tom M on Sep 11, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can buy and use a new stainless one. But they don't hold coffee hot as well as the glass ones. I wish I could buy another glass one just as a backup.
Does this model have a glass-lined carafe?
Steven N on Dec 29, 2014
BEST ANSWER: No glass, it's all metal. It keeps the coffee hot, no glass to worry about shattering. We rinse with hot water before making coffee to pre-heat the carafe.
does it grind the beans?
A shopper on Sep 22, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No - no grinder, just very straightforward coffee maker brewing coffee at the right temp! We love it - wouldn't have a built in grinder, since if one component breaks you're left with only a half-useful machine :) Would highly recommend the Breville grinder, though, have used that one for years and adore it!
How tall is it? Must fit under our cabinets.
A shopper on Dec 24, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Its a tiny bit over 12 inches tall. like a centimeter due to the lifts on the water tank lid. It will require access to fill and run the machine. It puts off a lot of steam when brewing. Overall love it, makes great coffee. I would have considered the smaller brother, if I knew it existed when ordering. It's so good I end up drinking the whole pot myself.
Bonavita 5-Cup Coffee Maker with Thermal Carafe
Bonavita 5-Cup Coffee Maker with Thermal Carafe
Is there a heating element under the carafe?
Christie S on May 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: There is no heating element under the carafe. At no time during or after the brewing cycle can I feel heat on the carafe, reservoir, or base. I love that the coffee maker turns off automatically upon brewing. No heating element means coffee doesn't sit for a long time on a hot plate becoming burnt and bitter.

I've been pleased with this product for the 18 months I've had it, and did my research prior. Product is sturdily built and brews very nice coffee.
