have a new wood cutting board and wanted to season it correctly from the very start. Boos is supposed to be the best! It was easy to use and my board looks great!

Based on the previous reviews, this is good stuff! I am making an investment in a Boo's Block and want to ensure it lasts for a long, long time. My previous cutting boards have dried up and cracked after prolonged use and I suspect it's because I didn't oil and was them regularly! Won't make that mistake again!!!

I have always used the Boos Wood Cream, but when I was in one of the store, the clerk recommended using the oil saying it absorbed into the wood better. He was right. I find the oil cleaner and easier to use than the cream.

What is the difference between the mystery oil and the cream? I am purchasing the deep groove maple board with pouring spout. Is one better suited for this board? Thank you
lilkkt on Oct 12, 2014
BEST ANSWER: From the John Boos FAQs:
"You can use Board Cream or Mystery Oil separately but is recommended to be used together for extra protection. The best way to describe it is to think of the Boos Block Mystery Oil as shampoo and Boos Block Board Cream as conditioner."
Are the cream and oil non-toxic? Are they derived from anything genetically modified? (GMO)?
Kathy P on Jan 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: According the Material Data Safety Sheet (MSDS available on the web all products like this) Boos Mystery Oil is 65% white oil (which further research indicates in Mineral Oil, a petroleum distillate) and 35% Linseed Oil and 2% Orange Oil. An MSDS doesn't give information on things like MGO or non -GMO so I can't answer that. Boos Block Board Cream MSDS says 80 to 99% white oil, 1 to 20 % beeswax (bleached) and a less than .01% vitamin E.

Toxic is a term used by different people to mean different things. Toxicity also is very dependent on how much of it you ingest. There is more information on Wikipedia on all of these ingredients. Mineral Oil has been used for a very long time on wooden cutting boards.
Is this safe to use on my wooden cooking utensils?
A shopper on Oct 15, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes.it gets absorbed by the cutting board,it darkens it bringing out the grain of the wood.
I never use it immediately after I spread mineral oil, make sure there is no remaiining oil on the surface, scrub it lightly before use
How often do you need to use these products every time you use a board or once a week or month?
LISA L on Jun 14, 2015
John Boos & Co. Mystery Oil
John Boos & Co. Mystery Oil
John Boos & Co. Board Cream
John Boos & Co. Board Cream
BEST ANSWER: I use my blocks several times during the day. Usually, I use the cream about once a month and leave it on the soak in overnight. As the board ages, it does not need as many cream applications. As you use cream or oil on your cutting board, you will be able to visually see a difference as the board dries out. When it gets the dry look, I put a coat of cream on it. I have tried both the oil and the cream and I prefer the cream.
I was told that Boos Mystery Oil could also be used on soapstone counters that I am having put in my kitchen. Is this true? Thank you.
A shopper on Jun 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have read that somewhere as well, but I wouldn't recommended unless it is listed in manufacturer care instructions.
