Adds excellent flavor to many foods
I have used this on both the stove top and the grill for: asparagus, shrimp, lobster tails, steaks, baked potatoes(cut in half), chicken and pork chops. The salt adds excellent flavor and texture(due to the heat). The biggest problem is the time it takes to heat up the block, especially on the grill. I start it on low and heat it up slow. Handling is much easier w/the holder.

The block exploded on our grill the first time we used it.
As directed we placed it on the cool grill & slowly brought it up to temp. The first time we opened the grill lid the salt block literally exploded & hot salt shards were thrown 10 feet from the grill. My kids were there when it happened & could have been injured.
Very disappointed for a costly purchase.

Be CAreful
We purchased this as a gift for my mother for her Birthday. Followed the instructions for heating it up as was explained in Bitterman's book. We had the block on the center of a gas grill and turned it on the lowest possible setting and let it go for 30 minutes. Then turned it up to one-quarter heat for another 15 mins, then half-heat for another 15 minutes, then turned the heat up to 80%. I opened the top of the grill to check the temperature after about 5 minutes on 80% heat, closed the lid, then about 5 seconds later...BOOM...the entire block EXPLODED in the grill. Be careful....a defective one could hurt someone....we were lucky the cover was closed...

Gourmet Touch Made Easy
Just like anything new in the kitchen, it takes practice to perfect. I did research this cooking technique on Pinterest and read up on the best way to prepare the block for the grill. You have to place the salt block in your oven at 150 for 15 minutes and keep increasing the temperature in 50 degree increments until it reaches 475-500 degrees. Then, take it out and place it on the grill that is already heated. When you do this transfer, you REALLY need the salt holder as it has great handles.

Believe me, I have made some mistakes with this vessel but I have learned something new every time I have used the salt block:

1. Heat it gradually in the oven inside until reaching the highest temperature, then transfer. It's nice to have someone to open the patio door for you.
2. Don't be afraid to use a light coating of EVOO, when grilling delicate fish (such as sea scallops). This way, it does not stick with the searing process. Add oil once on the grill with a basting brush, then your fish.
3. If you plan to serve appetizers on it you will most likely want to invest in a different one (for inside only use). The one from the grill will get discolored after a few uses.

My favorite spread inside on the block is Caprese salad. Just don't let it sit too long as it gets too salty.

My favorite meal so far on the grill block has been "Seared Ahi Tuna" (served with Wasabi Potato Salad).

Followed heating up instructions to the letter, using high end infrared thermometer. After about 15 mins into heat up two of the corners exploded off on the grill. Shouldn't affect taste but ruined presentation value.

Like the other reviews, bought this for a father's day gift, and it exploded. We followed the directions exactly. Just happy no one was hurt. Disappointed that my husband's first father's day gift was terrible and almost gave him a heart attack.

Great product
Just a note: You have got to follow directions here! Heat it slowly, cool it slowly, wash without soap, and you will have something that gives exceptional flavor and texture to proteins/vegetables! It is worth the effort. Unique flavor that our whole family enjoys.

It is a salt block... keep this in mind when heating and cooling! Follow directions for a great cooking experience!

Salmon stuck to the surface. Grill was at a very high heat before putting it on. Consistency of the fish was different.
I will try meat or poultry next.

How long does it last? And can it be washed after having raw meet on it? When wet does it disintegrate?

BEST ANSWER: It should last for years. Pink Himalayan salt is naturally antimicrobial, so the only washing it should need is a quick scrub with a stiff bristled brush. For this reason, disintegration, although inevitable, will be a long a very slow, gradual process.

BEST ANSWER: I personally don't have an infrared barbecue, but checked it out online and from what I see, I would say "no".
But on a regular gas barbecue I can definitely say, it is remarkable. I seared scallops on it, the key is to heat up slowly, follow directions on heating, then it's pure magic from there!!
Where do you store the salt block?

BEST ANSWER: I wrap it in wax paper and slide it in the skinny cupboard where I keep my cookie sheet and other stuff that shape. My friend has a rectangular cake pan/roasting pan and nestles hers in that. It is quite heavy so I keep it stored low..
Does the block make food salty if it cures or cooks for more than an hour?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, the block is suppose to salt food placed on it. Not sure if duration effects it. I have noticed there will be indentions where food has been place, so much assumption would be the more salt absorbed(i.e larger indention) the saltier the food would be. Hope this helps!

BEST ANSWER: I am still waiting for my block, Ordered June 19. However, based on my having broken my pizza stone many years ago, I just put the edges together and continued to use it. If you have the rack, this should be easy. I have used my broken-in-half pizza stone for 15 years now. I just place the two halves close together.
I Keep reading about the Bitterman’s Himalayan Salt Block exploding on the bbq, why is this happening? Has the product been tested? I want to buy one as a gift but now I am a little hesitant.

BEST ANSWER: I have not had any issues with my salt block. The food has been wonderful and the Salt Blocks I purchased from Sur La Table I've been very pleased and there has been no "exploding" small crack but no problems at all.
Follow instructions to SLOWLY heat, possibly a reason for issues. I love them.

How long does it take to heat up ,approximately, and how do you know "what temp" to cook various items? Also I see 4 blocks in a holder, is that how many you should have for cooking your Seafood, vegetables etc.? If so does that mean 35.00 x4 blocks? Thanks!!

The block takes about 15 minutes to heat up on the grill and is similar to using planks to cook your seafood. I adjust the temperature of my grill between high and medium for a good sear on the shrimp and scallops.

I bought the one salt block, which is adequate for cooking dinner for up to six people. If you are cooking for a large party you may want to purchase 2 salt blocks.

BEST ANSWER: Mildly salty, it really depends on how much liquid is in the food. I.E. scallops have a lot of liquid and if over cooked they get very salty. But at a high temp they cook quick and get off the grill (in my case) fast and the salt does not transfer very much. Shrimp don't have much water in them, cook in 3-4 minutes &get a slight salty taste. Veggies cook quick and @ a high temp don't get very salty, depends on moisture.

Remember Himalayan salt in not as salty as other salts. Hope this helps.

BEST ANSWER: Put the salt block in the oven or grill when you first start it heating it up. You want the salt block to warm up gradually: heat 20 min on low, 20 min on med, 20 min on high. You need to let the block heat up gradually To prevent cracking your blog k. Place your unseasoned meat directly in the salt block to cook. The salt block will do all your seasoning for you!

To clean: Moisten the salt block with a damp sponge (do not use soap). Scrub with a soft brush to remove any stuck matter, and wipe clean with the sponge. Try to keep the block as dry as possible – the less water the better. Repeat until the block is free of any cooked on food. Elevate the block so air can circulate and it can air dry.
