This cutting board is PERFECT!
I've had many cutting boards over the years but they pale in comparison to the John Boos cutting boards. The one I purchased from Sur La Table is the thicker one with a deep groove all around and it has a pour spout at one corner. This spout is a lifesaver. On Thanksgiving our turkey was so juicy and had lots of drippings. I didn't loose a single drop and my gravy was delicious! AND my counter top remained clean and dry. The wood used for this board is beautiful and smooth with no rough edges or coarseness. You won't be disappointed.

I gave one of these to my sister at Christmas time 2 years ago. I have been looking for a similar one since then. It just isn't out there. The deep groove is exactly what we need. I end up putting a towel under my current board (yes it has a groove but shallow) so it doesn't run all over the counter. I will be buying this again - only this time, I'm keeping it.

Just beware
If you only use this a couple times a year to carve meat, you might be ok, but if this is your daily cutting board you will be disappointed. First off the grove is comically deep and if you aren't carving meat but say chopping veg, you will spend a lot of time scraping bits and pieces out of the groove. Second, if ANY water gets trapped under the board, it will split within days. The cutting board I replaced this with lasted over 20 years, this one 3 months. Because mine got water damage, they wouldn't honor their warranty. I would really recommend against this company.

I have had my eye on this stunning piece for a very long time and Christmas Gift of a Sur la Table gift card made it possible! The John Boos & Co.® Deep-Groove Maple Board with Pouring Spout offered two key features: The deeper groove and the pouring spout. Knowing maple wood is naturally anti-bacterial and wonâ??t harbor bacteria was key in my decision. Also, friends rave about the Boos Maple as it ages beautifully. So excited!

James B on Dec 9, 2014
I'm replacing a maple cutting board very similar to this one that was a wedding gift. We recently celebrated our 30th anniversary and even though we are going strong our maple cutting board wore out. This board is necessary for carving turkeys and other meats that have juices escape during the carving process. I add the meat juices to the gravy for more flavor so the pour spout in this board will be helpful. The juice well in the board also prevents a major mess all over the counter top.
Christine D on Dec 8, 2014
The deep groove to catch juices and pouring spout were key to choosing this. The 20x15 size is more than sufficient for something large like a 20 lb turkey or a family size rib roast, and the attending juices.
Wayne L on Dec 7, 2014
Because of the depth of the groove and the pouring spout.

Is the cutting board grooved on both sides?

#836361John Boos & Co
A shopper on Dec 1, 2011
BEST ANSWER: An irreplaceable addition to any kitchen, this reversible, edge-grain maple cutting board features an easy-pouring spout and a deep groove that catches juices as you cut and carve. Grip handles on the sides make it easy to lift, and the maple wood is naturally anti-bacterial and won’t harbor bacteria. This is grooved only on one side.
what is the benefit of a very thick cutting board such as 2 inches or over compared to say a 1 1 and half inch?
A shopper on Aug 7, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I find this on a cutting board forum. I think it's a pretty spot on assessment:

"Thicker = heavier (less likely to move around), less prone to warping, and longer lasting (eventually you'll have to sand out knife grooves). I think 1-1/2" is probably minimum for an endgrain board. But you don't want it to be too thick; it effects the height of your work surface and unless you're tall the added height can become a problem. You also want it light enough that you can move it to your sink easily for cleaning."
How much does this board weigh?
A shopper on Oct 22, 2013
BEST ANSWER: This cutting board weighs about 20 lbs.
Is the cutting board made of solid wood?
A shopper on Apr 26, 2012
BEST ANSWER: The number-one supplier of butcher blocks and cutting boards to restaurants, butchers, even the White House. Based in Effingham, Illinois, since 1887, John Boos & Co. provides premium products to home cooks and celebrity chefs such as Charlie Trotter and Mario Batali.

All Boos Blocks are Solid Wood through and through. An irreplaceable addition to any kitchen, this reversible, edge-grain maple cutting board features an easy-pouring spout and a deep groove that catches juices as you cut and carve. Grip handles on the sides make it easy to lift, and the maple wood is naturally anti-bacterial and won’t harbor bacteria.
