I love my Ice Cream Bowl attachment! I have owned this product for about a year and use it fairly regularly. It is so easy to use and comes with some simple recipes. I also have found some great recipes in the Ben and Jerry's book and David Lebovitz's book ""The Perfect Scoop."" I like that it is an addition to my KitchenAid Pro 600 Stand Mixer and not a a completely seperate item cluttering my counter. Keep in mind that the bowl is large and will need to fit in your freezer before and during preparation. You will also need a separate container to store finished ice cream. I use a Glasslock tempered glass storgage piece (also available from Sur La Table.) Although it is a bit more expensive then some other brands, I believe the attachment is worth the investment. I have never had any issues with mine
You can eat right away, but it's best to let the flavors marry in the freezer overnight. I keep mine in the freezer during summer months with frozen fruit stored inside! This works great and is a great investment! Love it
I had a different ice cream mixer but the paddle/dasher broke. I bought this as a replacement and love it. First, I like the fact that this is an accessory to my KitchenAid stand mixer and not a stand alone product. It is small enough to fit in my chest freezer. As a note, however, I did try and make two quarts of Sur La Table's Guinness Ice cream recipe at the same time. I would not advise doing a double batch because it does not fit into the bowl comfortably - there was a lot of spill over (which my dog loved) and it was more difficult to get the ice cream to freeze up. Also, be sure that the dasher is appropriately attached to the head. Like my other ice cream maker, if the bowl is too cold, it will be difficult to blend - this has a simple solution - just wait a few minutes
Had to give away my ice cream maker when we moved to Florida, so with gift card given to me as a thank you from my daughter and her new husband for helping with their wedding I thought this would be a perfect time to get this attachment for my much loved Kitchenaid mixer.
Best Answer:I've been following the directions from the instruction booklet. So, when I don't add any fruits or anything else, it stirred it for 20 minutes. I recently made a Bluebeery Almond Crumble Cheesecake Ice Cream (Paleo diet). So, since I was adding the cooked, chilled blueberries and Almond Crumble, I stirred the ice cream mixture for 15 minutes and then hand stirred in the blueberries and crumble. I think the directions say to freeze for 2-4 hours, but I usually make it at least a day before I need it, so I don't know how soon you can use it.
The ice cream has to be beaten in the bowl for about 40 minutes, but it can be more or less with different recipes. A tip, if you use any alcohol based flavorings like vanilla extract, it must be cooked first, or the alcohol will prevent the ice cream from freezing. You're supposed to refreeze the bowl "overnight" or 15 hours. I've never tried using it again sooner so I couldn't say whether the results would be any good. Enjoy!
To make a single batch, I l churn it for about 20-30 minutes in the freezer bowl and then put it in the freezer. After about 4 hours in the freezer, it's ready to scoop. I keep the bowl in the freezer all the time, so I'm not sure about your second question, but the manual recommends freezing the bowl for 15 hours before making ice cream.
It takes about 30 mins to reach soft-serve consistency. I then transfer to the freezer to harden it further. Re how long after a single batch to re-freeze: I have only ever done one batch in a day. Overnight is definitely enough time to refreeze. Not sure about less than that.
