These durable 18/10 stainless steel colanders have bases for keeping them upright on the countertop and stable when in the sink. plus two sturdy handles. Dishwasher safe. The 8" colander holds 1½ qts.; the 9" colander holds 3 qts.; the 11" colander holds 5 quarts.
I have a small plastic colander that works well for single servings but can't handle a bunch of grapes without tipping or losing some down the drain, never mind a head of lettuce. This 11"" colander is large and lightweight. Well constructed. And very stable. Great staple for any kitchen!!! (Plus it works well for a serving piece or display.
I like the feet and the fact that it doesn't hold water in the rim when in the dishwasher. Still kind of prefer my mesh strainer as it can be used for smaller items and I usually end up reaching for that one more often.
I was previously using an enamel plated/stainless steel?? colander and although when originally purchased it seemed of good quality, within a year it began to rust near the footing and about one year later one of the handles broke.
Since the Sur La Table colander is all stainless, I anticipate it will not rust and the handles should last as well. They seem very sturdy.

Best Answer:This stainless steel colander can be used to steam veggies in a pan. Just make sure you have the right size to rest at the top of the pan you are using so that the veggies are not submersed in the boiling water. The handles are very sturdy and should support the weight of the vegetables.
