This is one of my favorite plates because it's perfect balance of design. I come from the philosophy that plates should be white and showcase the food.
Serving food: The bowl is round enough for liquids but flat enough for solids (esp. if there is a little gravy or jus), making it one of my most used plates. Soups, salads, stews, pastas -- just about everything looks wonderful.
That said, I wouldn't serve a NY strip, side of veg, and potato in these plates. That is much more suited to flat plate.
Stacked foods look beautiful. E.g. a little parsnip puree on the bottom, braised short rib, topped with a small salad on top looks restaurant quality.
Aesthetics: In my opinion this plate has excellent proportions between bowl size and rim width that create a visually pleasing aesthetic. Similarly styled plates often don't have a wide enough rim, throwing off the the elegant balance.
Price: A touch expensive at $15 a plate, is fair but a tad high. I'm a firm believer that one should have a stock of plates and reluctant to pick up 10 or 12. Exact servings like 4 or 6 is a mistake. You always need more than you think because of guests or the occasional broken plate
I bought these because my fine China set does not come with bowls this large and I wanted to serve gumbo. My fine China has a white background, so these go perfectly. The bowl (not including the rim) holds 20 ounces. The only problem is that they are almost 12 inches across, so they will not fit in my upper kitchen cabinets. I had to make room in a bottom cabinet
I actually shopped around for pasta bowls, and this was my favorite. It's perfect for soup or pasta. I believe nothing makes food look better than a white dish, and for me, the fewer the embellishments, the better. The actual well of the bowl is about 7.5"" in diameter, and roughly 1"" at its deepest point. I like that it's spherical, versus having sides and a bottom. I also like the large, not too sharply-angled lip. It's perfect to rest a side of bread on, or a garnish even. I did think the price was a bit steep, so I waited for a sale. :) I own many Sur La Table whiteware items, and they've yet to disappoint
I know some people might think this is too big for the table. It is most definitely NOT. This is my favorite special company pasta bowl to use. With all this great seafood I have up here, only this pasta bowl can do it justice
I received these as a Christmas gift and I have since gone back and bought 2 more. They are the best value for my money. They really showcase the pasta. I love that they have a large rim that leaves a ledge for bread to lay on. They also have a generous bowl that allows for a large serving of pasta for my husband. I have been really happy with how they clean up, and the quality for the money cannot be beat
I wanted to love these pasta bowls. I purchased 8 of them. After only about 3 uses, one of my bowls chipped. what happened to ""chip resistant""? and it's not like I had a major calamity. We just noticed a chip and have no idea how it happened. I'm very disappointed and plan to take the bowl back for an exchange. I hope it was just a fluke. But you can't advertise ""chip resistant"" and have the bowl chip after a few normal uses. had the bowl not chipped, i would have been an enthusiastic reviewer!! They are the perfect size and present beautifully
I was tired eating soup out of cups. These bowls were exactly what I wanted. When I make soup, pasta or stew these bowls are the perfect size and the perfect presentation. Love them and I got them on sale. The cooking world is perfect
I had searched high and low for this classic pasta bowl without success until I found this. It's exactly what I was searching for, simple, large and white, perfect and at a reasonable price. I ordered four and they arrived quickly and well packaged.
Timeless design elevates anything in it. Nicely sets off soups, salads, & smaller dishes like scallops. Makes even simple dishes more special, and confers a restaurant-quality presentation to your meals. Great way to make date nights in all the more special
I had to explain to my dear wife why I wanted to include these stunning pasta dishes to our purchase of Bistro plates and bowls. A great presentation for pasta, plus entree salads and other one plate meals. Alas, she convinced me to only purchase two - for the two of us. I'll be adding more to our inventory, assuredly
It has been difficult finding solid white, round bowls with wide rims that do not have additional designs or colors. The others we have found that we liked were either very expensive, or came in bulk for the hotel and restaurant industry. These look nice, were affordable, and I hope will arrive as presented in the photo.
I always thought food just looks more elegant in one of these instead of a regular plate. Plus it's practical, the low-bowl shape and raised edge keeps the food on the plate and probably stays warm longer too. Love!
I have had these for years and enjoy using them. My daughter and daughter in law love them as well so I thought they would make a great Christmas gift and the price is exceptional! I really love the way they look on the table!
Similar bowls are used in a restaurant I frequent and they make a great presentation. After searching online for something similar, Sur La Table was the only site that offered such bowls. After looking at them in the store, I was sure these were the ones I wanted.
Best Answer:Good question. I own these but never measured. They are enough for one large portion. I'd guess the volume between 12-16 oz. and could vary because you might not fill it to the top as the as the contents (esp. thin soups) will splash on to the rim when carrying the plate to the table.
