The mortar and pestle carved from volcanic rock is among the world's oldest kitchen tools. Our molcajete (mortar) and tejolete (pestle) are hand carved from a single piece of basalt rock, making each piece unique.

  • Ideal for crushing whole spices.
  • Great for serving guacamole.
  • Line with lettuce leaves to use as a serving bowl.
  • Hand carved from a single piece of basalt rock.
  • No two are exactly alike.
  • Season the mortar before first use: grind raw rice inside the bowl until the rice turns gray; empty and repeat until the rice no longer turns gray; rinse with water and scrub with a brush.
  • Always place the molcajete on top of a cloth to avoid scratching the surface of your table or countertop.
  • Avoid drastic changes in temperature.

Why did you choose this?
Sur La Table Store
Trying out new recipes. I also wanted the other preseason molcajete, but didn't want a pig's face on mine. I prefer simple designs.
Sara K on May 30, 2015
Because it is big and I can make guac in it
Mary Beth G on Feb 25, 2015
Wanted a large molcajete to cook food, not just guac and salsa
Nikki A on Apr 16, 2015
We love to entertain as well as we have a LARGE family, so this looks like it will fill the bill. Can't wait to make molcajete for my friends!
Beryl R on Jan 24, 2015
what is the capacity sz?

its big but its not deep and then what is the difference in capacity between this oversized one and lets say a reg 8"" one?...plus the dark colored one is the one for sale? the lighter color with the hand and the quac inside looks much deeper which one is for sale
A shopper on Nov 23, 2013
Best Answer: The 8"" molcajete is 1 1/2"" deep and holds 3 cups. The oversized molcajete is 3 1/2"" deep and holds 18 cups. Because this is made of naturally occuring lava rock, no two of them look the same. Both images available online show molcajetes of the same size and shape

Does this really hold 18 cups? Seems like 8 cups would be more likely. Also, I want to warm this in a 400 degree oven and serve hot food in it. Our local Mexican restaurant does this and the meal stays hot the whole evening. I didn't read that it is oven safe. Is it?
dani S on Aug 16, 2014
Best Answer: Yes, it does. I actually measured its capacity myself about a year ago. Please note, however, that this was a fluid capacity.

Could I pick this up at your Walnut Creek CA Store ? if not what is the shipping cost to 94565 zip code

The Walnut Creek CA store does have one in store, but it is a floor model, so there is no box for it. If you want to pick it up at the store, I would suggest calling them to have it set aside with your name on it. We can ship one to you from our warehouse and the shipping cost for that would be approximately $20.00 for the ground shipping. Because of the weight, size and material this item is made from, it is not available for upgraded express or overnight shipping.
