Microplane zesters and graters feature unique razorlike edges that finely slice instead of tearing or shredding. Originally created as a woodworking tool, the first Microplane rasp was invented by brothers Richard and Jeff Grace in Russellville, Arkansas, and has since become a food-prep essential found in kitchens around the world.
I was really excited about this grater because of the micoplane name and the quality of their other products, but this was very disappointing and cracked within a couple months of getting it. The black part, that the microplanes are connected to, is all plastic and cracked under the pressure of grating. The metal microplanes themselves are great and sharp, but mine has cracked so much that I'm no longer able to use it
I've been using this tool for 2 years now and it has been great. I like that you can remove one of the sides so you can clean the inside easily. I have to admit that the extra coarse side is starting to get a little dull but other sides are still very sharp. The side that removes is great for grating cheese and I actually remove it from the unit and lay it ontop of a bowl and do the grating. Works great and easy on the arms. I love my grater but I'm needing a sharper extra coarse side so will get one of the single units. I think it is a nice unit but I do hand wash it and do not put it in the dishwasher which I think might weaken it with the hot water wash and heat to dry the dishes. I would recommend this for quality and ease of use.
The black plastic broke the first time I used it to grate cheese. I've super glued it four times now and treat it gingerly, but it still has issues. Great design and wonderful that the back comes off for cleaning, but not quite up to par
The first time I used this grater, I took a chunk out of my thumb while trying to shred a carrot.
I've learned to treat the device more gingerly since then, and the rest of my fingers remain intact. But I confess I'm still a little nervous every time I pick it up.
That said, it works reasonably well it's my go-to for quickly tearing apart large blocks of cheese. It hasn't broken, as it has for some of the other reviewers. But I don't like it as much as the smaller handheld Microplane graters I have, even though they don't work as quickly
