Excellent electric kettle
We recently had to replace our old electric kettle and after quite a bit of research decided on this Breville kettle. It's very well made, boils water very quickly, and is easy to use. We drink coffee and different kinds of tea so we actually use all the temperature settings, and they all work great. The hold feature is also nice to have. There are water level windows on both sides of the kettle, which is great because one of is is a righty and the other a lefty. The sturdiness of the construction makes it a bit heavy when full, but that's a nit overall. We highly recommend this kettle, especially if you need the variable temperature settings

Loved this electric kettle- until it rusted!
We got this kettle as a wedding gift and have been using it multiple times a day for the last three months. We absolutely loved it!

However, we recently noticed that the inside bottom is beginning to rust. I'm bringing it back to Sur la Table today to see if it's a faulty model or if this is common...

Looks great and works really well
I looked at a lot of different kettles before purchasing this one. Since the kettle sits out on the counter, I wanted something that looks really nice and works really well. The Breville kettle was the perfect choice.

The preset temperatures and hold function are awesome. I drink a lot of tea and my husband makes French press coffee a lot, so it is nice to be able to set the correct temperatures for that. The hold button is great because I can start it up and come back anytime in the next 20 minutes and have the water be the temperature I need.

I can tell that this kettle is well made with good materials, and I am very pleased with how it looks in my kitchen. I highly recommend this kettle

Are you able to add tea leaves directly into the water or in the unit via a filter, or can you only heat the water and steep the tea in something else?
A shopper on Aug 11, 2014
Best Answer: This one is made just for water, but Breville does carry a tea maker you can add your leaves to directly. It's called the Breville Gourmet Tea Brewer & Variable Temperature Kettle.

1) Does it shut off automatically if you don't select hold? (Not sure if "safety shut off" feature is the same thing as auto shut off. )
2) Does it make any alert sound or whistle when it is ready?
A shopper on Jul 13, 2015
Best Answer: In answer to your questions:
(1) Yes, it shuts off automatically if the kettle is not being used for more than 10 minutes or so which is great when I'm on the go and haven't gotten a chance to unplug it.

(2) Yes, it makes a audible, yet discreet high pitched "beep beep" sound. Pretty much every feature on this kettle is elegantly designed and well-thought out (as would be expect from the high standards that Breville company have upheld)

is there a minimum amount of water that you need to boil in this kettle? I will only make tea for one so would only want to boil 6 oz at a time.
Don C on Jun 2, 2015
Best Answer: Hi Don. All electric kettles have a minimum, usually around 2 cups. The Breville also has a 2 cup minimum. I don't think you'll find one that only boils 6oz at a time because they al have a safety auto shut off feature that will stop the boiling if there isn't enough water in the kettle.

It is wonderful kettle, though. I use it multiple times a day, every day, for more than a year and it looks brand new.

How long does it take to boil 3 cups of water?
A shopper on Jul 16, 2015
Best Answer: I set mine at the French press temp (200 degrees). So this morning I did exactly 3 cups, it took 3 min 50 sec to beep complete. But, the way this kettle works is in two stages. It heats the water to a higher temp than the setting very rapidly, then let's it cool down to just below the setting and then re-heats to get to the exact temp. So, this morning it took 2 min 40 sec to get to the higher temp then another 1 min 10 sec to do the exact temp

Is the interior of this kettle lined with plastic or some other material? Or is it stainless steel (with the polycarbonate window)?
A shopper on Feb 14, 2015
Best Answer: This a wonderful kettle! The inside is stainless steel with a lid release button on top which has a small area of polycarbonate and the dual water windows have the polycarbonate. This is a great product even my son wants one for his home!

What coffee is used?
A shopper on Jan 3, 2015
Best Answer: No coffee is used in this kettle. It's simply meant to heat water.

is this electric and can it be used at the table by simply taking the crafe from the base?

I now use a regular tea pot and boil my water after the tea has steeped then I use a thermos to take it to the table.. Can I use this the same way?
A shopper on Jun 10, 2012
Best Answer: Get the temperature ideal for coffee or your favorite tea with the touch of a button. Five preset brewing temperatures include green tea, white tea, oolong tea, French press, and boil and black tea. The ‘hold temperature’ feature keeps water at the selected temperature for 20 minutes. A water-level indicator on each side allows easy viewing.

You can take this carafe to the table without the base, however it will not stay as hot for long as the base is what maintains the water temperature.

Does the heating element touch the water?
A shopper on Apr 17, 2013
Best Answer: The heating element is in the base that the kettle sits on, so the water does not come into contact with the heating element in this product
