Whether flash-searing ahi tuna steaks, presenting artfully arranged sashimi or chilling delicious ribbons of salted caramel, this thick, hand-cut slab of pink Himalayan salt is a delightfully inventive way to cook, chill and serve your favorite dishes. This mineral-rich pink salt block enhances the flavors of anything placed on it, making it great for grilling steaks and seafood, chilling and serving sushi or beef carpaccio, serving cheeses, curing salmon gravlax—even searing shrimp and scallops tableside.

Each block is cut by hand from natural salt deposits found in the Himalayas. Naturally antimicrobial, salt plates require very little maintenance or cleaning—simply scrub lightly and allow to dry completely between each use. For best results and to help prevent cracking, pair with our stainless-steel salt-block holder.

Care & Usage Show

  • Scrub clean without detergent, pat dry, then air dry completely before reusing. Block will darken and erode with use—this is normal and will not negatively affect performance
  • Caution: Salt plates require very gradual heating in order to maintain the physical integrity of the product. While the plate is able to withstand exposure to high heat, it does need to come up to temperature gradually (see use instructions). Use of the salt plate under a broiler is not advised

Not for grilling
I bought this primarily for grilling, thinking how wonderful food would taste with the salt infused into the meat during the grilling process. Well, the food did taste good, but the stone broke into two pieces after only one use. I think this product would be better used cold for serving sushi, and not grilling. but, since the photo shows it on a grill, that's how I used it. Also, the juices bake into a hard, black crust on the salt that is a bear to get off during the cleaning process

Cooking on a slab of salt
I really enjoyed using this slab of salt on the grill. NOTE: You have to bring the slab up to grill temperature gradually. I put all the coals on one side of the grill and the slab on the other side. With the lid on, the salt came up to temperature without any problems, i.e., cracking, breaking. I sear-grilled the food first and then let everything finish on top of the slab. I then moved the salt to a wooden cutting board (with all the food on it) and moved everything to the table. Yummy and fun presentation

"Coolest gift for the person who has ""everything"""
This is an awesome product! The salt plate can be used in the oven, on top of the stove, on the grill and put in the freezer to serve cold foods on. It adds flavor, but don't worry, it will not oversalt your food. I love sushi, so it makes a cool way of serving it to my guests. The salt plate is a great conversation piece and it is such a unique gift. It is a long-lasting gift. Give it to the person who has everything

I like to impress
I love to impress my husband with my culinary knowledge (I don't have any) and when I gave my husband the Salt Plate and what WE can do with it, he loved it. We used it same day. Surf and Turf. Heat the SP to 400F and serve at the table. I have not used it with the BBQ but that comes next. We bought a pedestal for it and we have it display in the kitchen. Don't add salt to the food and need to have thin pieces of meat. It is great for fajitas

yes you can oversalt!
i was in love with the idea of this salt plate after reading about it in a blog. After research i found that Sur la Table had the best deal so I drove 30 minutes just to purchase it. the plate is well represented by the site, but mine did have a big crack through the middle that might cause breakage with use.
I brought it back home and preheated it 375f in the oven and stuck a 1lb fillet of fresh rockfish on it. after 5 minutes in the oven, I flipped the fillet and let it sit in there for another 5. I took it out of the oven and let it rest for another 5 minutes on the plate and then we ate it with rice. Good thing there was rice! the fish was incredibly salty. I still like the plate and the idea, but my technique needs wor

Salt Block
THIS IS AMAZING!
if you've never used one, you must! i own 4 of them. i use one on the stove inside, one on the grill, and two for presenting food at the table! Your steaks will taste 2043902x better if you use this block! its so simple! open your grill, place the block directly on the grates and heat it up place an onion on it to deglaze it and then put your steak on there and cook it until its done to your liking. the steaks will NOT be over salted but they WILL be so tender and delicious! all foods taste amazing off of this block... scallops, shrimp, steak...you name it!

ITS A MUST BUY! don't let anyone tell you any different

Beautiful and Useful
Isn't it a joy when something this beautiful is also useful?
Bought this as a special gift for a friend who loves to grill. It is beautiful enough to display as a striking slab of crystal, but it also adds wonderful flavor to the cooked food (and not, as some might suppose, simply saltiness).
Bought it with the carrier and would recommend that as well. This baby gets hot! (But don't think the carrier totally prevents danger of burns -- be careful --

Salt Plate
I love this product. I also purchased with it the plate holder. I store it inside in a dry area and when were ready to use it we bring it out. We have cooked on it and aged beef on it. It is not salty but it does enhance the flavors. We found that we love this product and will be giving it for Christmas gifts. Please remember to store it in a dry place where it can breathe. enjoy!

As great as expected
The plate does make a difference. The meat tastes better. After tasting meat prepared on a plate, we dont go back to grill, unless we need to cook for many people. We just keep the plate heated on the electric range (set in its metal holding frame, so the plate does not touch the heated glass surface) and put the meat on the top when the plate is heated enough. I dont feel the meat to be oversalted, although we slightly season it and marinate as we usually do before grilling. And cleaning is easier than cleaning the grill

This product looks great....
I was so excited to get this for Mother's Day! We followed the directions and used the salt block on the bbq. I expected a subtle hint of salt, not the overwhelming taste of salt. It was horrible. We returned it the next day. Customer service was excellent and they did not hassle us in any way. Highly recommend the store, just not this product

I love it
Not only is this a great product to use it makes the perfect gift for someone who already has everything in their kitchen.

Just make sure you don't cook anything too long on it. A steak < 1"" thick or burgers are great on this thing. Any longer and things can become a little over seasoned

This was a fun gift.
Each year we try and come up with something unique for the partners in our law firm. Realizing that they are both grill masters, this salt plate and the rack were an excellent choice and is impressive. Their feedback from grilling and serving chilled appetizers has been very positive. We would definitely recommend this salt plate and the rack

MAYBE NOT PRACTICAL BUT FUN!
The salt slab is great to grill on (all we have used it for so far) Best scallops I have ever had. You do have to heat it a long time, it is heavy, it is a pain to store and clean, but it makes the food faste great and is beautiful to serve on. Like the 'holder' for it. Would not buy the cookbook again; find stuff online instead. Glad we got it!

Pretty Tasty
I enjoy the salt block but did not find it as wonderful as others have. I agree most of the time that it is not overly salty but cleaning it is a pain in the rear. You are supposed to just rinse it off and let it dry. Well mine has pits and rivulets all through it from both cooking and cleaning so it no longer is pretty at all. Keeping an additional one just for looks seem a little ludicrous to me. I keep mine in the oven for storage in the additional block holder because otherwise it makes a mess in the cabinet.

Really changes the taste
I found this to add way too much salt to items I cooked on it. Perhaps I did something wrong, but after using it about a dozen times...in the trash it went. I am not a grilling novice and have a high end grill that gets plenty hot. I didn't use it for chilled foods so cannot comment on that

Loved the idea of this product. We find it overly salty, hard to clean. Would not recommend it. Even if it's on sale. We paid full price for ours

Great Taste!
I got this as a gift and love it. I use it on my Weber grill, try to heat it slowly and have cooked steak, chicken breasts and shrimp. All have had a great flavor.

The real deal
It is large, perfect width. My husband uses it on our Big Green Egg and it works great. We are big seafood eaters and it just creates amazing flavors. Love it!

Good addition
I am a kitchen gadget junkie, so any new product I want to have it. I used it on my grill. I heated it up slowly as per instructions. I placed chicken breasts on it and grilled them as usual. I didn't season them because I did not know what the salt block would add. They came out very moist, not a bit dry. The only drawback to this product is that one cannot use this on the spur of the moment since it takes 45 minutes to gradually heat the stone. I definitely would recommend this product. I also purchased the rack for easier handlng.

How do use this, is it consumed, does it absorb liquids from the foods

Best Answer: This item will get smaller with use, but it takes quite a long time. It will also absord liquids from the foods that are prepared on the slab and the color will change, however its natural antimicrobial properties makes it completely safe. I always recommend that one is used for cooking and one is used for presenting.

How does the salt plate not errode despite being able to wash it?

when you mix salt and water, how does erosion of the salt plate not occur

Best Answer: you do not wash the block. the block will wear away after some time using it...but as for washing. you just simply rinse it under the water and scrub a little bit... i dont ever wash the one i use on my grill...if you use an onion you can deglaze it and it will be good to go. the one i have on my stove i just rinse off and scrub with a steel brush

Can a single plate be used for savory as well as sweet?

Can I use the same plate for sweet dishes (i.e., caramel, chocolate, etc.) as well as for savory cooking (i.e., chicken, steak, etc.)? (Obviously, not at the same time.

Best Answer: I wouldn't suggest it. Since the salt block isn't washable, there's a chance it might absorb the flavors of the food you place on it & it would be hard to remove

Is it easy or difficult to control the salt content when using the block?

Best Answer: Most people say that items pick up only a delicate saltiness from this block, but if you find that the flavor is too salty for your taste, a light layer of oil can be added to cut down on the flavor.

Is a 2" thick salt block better than the 1 1/2" thick one? What does the different thickness do?

Best Answer: The only difference might be that the 2" will last longer as the salt get absorbed with use and the extra 1/2" may extend the life of the block

I bought a salt block, but when I unwrapped it there is a big chip out of the corner. That is the way it was wrapped up. Should I return it for another? This is a gift. Or will they all be chipped?
