Ok so if you are looking for a great set of salt and pepper mills look no farther. Both the salt and pepper have several grind settings, more for pepper than salt, with a twist of the lower portion. The acrylic container allows you to see what is in there very nice when filled with exotic salts. The Salt is not a stainless grinder, it is ceramic, but still has a lifetime warranty and will grind with popcorn salt finest. On the coarsest setting is crunchy but not too big. The pepper has a more setting from very fine up to nice and coarse, for things like rolling the rim of burgers in or for steaks. I will offer anyone looking at mills on sur la tables site the price even though it looks like it is for a set is per mill... Imagine my surprise when I got to the store to buy them. Over all great set will perform as well as any of the other more expensive mills and look great to boot
I've tried many salt and pepper mills over the years. These are by far the best I've used yet. The grind is easily adjustable over a wide range, and it stays put while you grind. Both salt and pepper can be ground finer than other grinders, which is needed occasionally. The mechanism seems very well built, though I have only had them for a couple of weeks so can't really comment on reliability. Highly recommended
I am very pleased with this purchase. I bought it based on the recommendation from America's Test Kitchen, they also recommended Sut La Table as the company to buyit from. The mill works great, it is easy to adjust the coarseness of grind. The grinder is easy to use, and produces even sized particles. It is attractive on the counter and table. It even arrived loaded with peppercorns, although not a full load. The web site for ordering was easy to navigate, ordering was a snap, and the product arrived a few days earlier than projected. A very good purchase, I highly recommend this product and Sur La Table
I've had this pepper grinder for quite a little while. It has several nice features to it that make it stand above the rest.
First, the coarseness of the pepper can be easily adjusted by turning a dial on the bottom of the shaker. Unlike most shakers, you don't have to tighten a knob on top and guess for the coarseness.
Second, this seems like the only pepper mill with the easy coarseness adjustment that also has clear sides so you can visually tell when it is getting empty.
The mill is easy to refill. The top just pops off instead of having to unscrew anything. My only complaint could be that the top could be designed to pop off a little easier with a push button release for elderly people with arthritis. But for those without arthritis I think it should be fairly easy to remove.
It also grinds very well and is quite attractive sitting in your kitchen
Would give the Cole and Mason Derwent Salt & Pepper Mills no stars if I could. I purchased both the pepper and salt grinders in December 2013. At $40 each, they are not cheap. BOTH grinders broke within 3 1/2 months! The design is faulty. You simply pull of the top of each grinder to refill. The top become loose from pulling it off. The acrylic bottom of both grinders eventually became detached when picked up by the top, dropping the acrylic bottom to the floor or table, spilling salt and pepper everywhere, and the acrylic bottoms broke. I have asked customer service for my money back. Very poor quality and design for the price
I wanted to add my thumbs up to the many other positive product reviews for this grinder. I was in the market to replace my Peugeot grinder so, as I usually do, I went to the equipment reviews at ""America's Test Kitchen"" and saw that this grinder was rated number one. Reviews were good, so I took a chance. THis product, in both its pepper and salt models, is as promised. It is easy to hold and operate, stylish on the table, and produces great grinds. Both the salt and pepper consistently grind to the level set for. I recommend this grinder and Sur-la-table without reservation
I really liked this pepper mill until it broke. We've owned it for less than a year. Plastic parts on something that is used to grind something like peppercorns that have resistance is not a good idea. Perhaps this mill is for those that do not cook as often or as much as I do. Very disapointed as I researched these prior to purchase and this is supposed to be one of the best. On the good side the different grinds was excellent
I absolutely am glad I splurged on these salt and pepper mills. They are so easy to use and look stunning next to my stove. I love that there are 3 adjustable sizes and you can see if you are getting low on salt or pepper.
Although I rated it a 5 star product, the stainless steel gets smudges on occasion
It got rated the number one pepper mill by Cooks Illustrated and it has a really sleek industrial design. My pepper mill sits on top of my counter in view all of the time. Looks are really important to me in a pepper mill.
No, just hold the base in one hand, and twist the top section with the other. It is very simple and easy to use. I have arthritis in one wrist, and this has not been a problem. It turns easily, and drops a generous amount of pepper without a lot of twisting
I use Himalayan Pink salt which comes in bigger pieces than normally purchases sea salt. Will this work with this grinder?
A shopper on May 3, 2013
Best Answer:Cole and Mason simply states ""Fill with coarse sea salt or rock salt (not with salt flakes).""Pink Himalayan salt can be used in this salt mill, but I would suggest that you use the smallest granules you can find
