I love it
For popcorn to pop, you need to achieve a certain temperature. Ideally, reaching a temperature where all the kernels will pop during a very short period of time to avoid burning the already popped popcorn. This is why oil is useful/necessary in popping popcorn -- it distributes the heat easily and allows the batch to pop rapidly.
Unfortunately, this popper relies on the vagaries of microwave heating with which everyone is aware - some parts of the heated object are hot, and others remain unheated depending on their position. As a result, this popper burns a lot of popcorn while leaving other kernels unpopped, and rendering the batch inedible. My first batch without any butter actually smoked up my kitchen.
Even with butter added for flavor and to act as an oil as in a conventional popper, the butter tends to burn before the popcorn will pop, and the popping is still delayed long enough that early popping kernels are burned and the batch ruined.
This is also a difficult item to clean, and frankly much more work than a traditional popcorn popper.
This is an attractive idea for a product, but it is non-functional and a waste of money.
Try one of the thinly skinned crank/stirred popcorn poppers for real success. They use a minimum of oil and pop their kernels very rapidly resulting in a uniform and tasty popcorn
We usually like about four cups or even more, so the larger popper would have been a better choice for us.
We do not use butter, margarine or oil. That may be why we have had to experiment quite a bit on timing of the popcorn. We burned one whole batch not realizing how fast it can burn. Be very careful and stay with the popper to make sure the popcorn is not turning black
We bought the larger of the two poppers yesterday and have made several batches already and are honing our popcorn making skills..Getting the time figured out is the biggest thing and I think there are a lot of variables: microwave power, freshness of kernels, amount of time, quantity of popcorn used, etc.
The taste of plain popcorn with just a little butter is amazing!! So much better than microwave popcorn!!
The only downside is the size of the opening, but it's possible that it needs to be small for a reason that I don't know about.
Just make sure you don't buy one that's too big for your microwave. We got ours home and it BARELY fits. I really can't put butter in the top or it will make a huge mess on the ceiling.. But no problem. I just heat up a little butter afterwards and pour it on.
All in all we love it. Didn't give it five stars because of the small opening. Other than that, it's an ingenious idea!!
I saw this and knew it'd be perfect for me! I've made popcorn at least 10x since Christmas and the other night...MY PERFECT BATCH! I use 1/4 cup of kernels, spread around my margarine around the entire lid with a little bit of height. Then I carve out a little dallop in the middle for me to add my Tapatio sauce. Then I put it in the microwave for 3 min. It takes that long because I have a lot of butter/Tapatio. I could probably use another 5 seconds but the 3 min with about 15 unpopped kernels is better than chancing it with some overcooked kernels.
I'll be buying the smaller size to keep at work! Love this item
