Simplex was originally founded in 1903. The Simplex passion for absolute standards of excellence was fundamental to the company's founding ethos, and remains as important today as it was then.
Since then the company has grown to be a world leader in the manufacture of fully functional whistling copper kettles. Simplex kettles are now found in countries the world over and the craftsmanship needed to produce these kettles is second to none.
Some unexpected drawbacks make it not worth the higher cost for this tea kettle.
For the cost of the item I expected more. I was hoping for more of a heavy, heirloom quality copper tea kettle. This was not it. I was disappointed to find it only held a 1-year guarantee and came with a warning that pouring cold water into the kettle when hot could strip the tin lining from inside the pot. That means I would have to wait for the kettle to cool before I could heat more water after my first pot boiled. I was disappointed to learn that the construction is copper over tin instead of solid copper throughout. I used it just twice to boil water in and found that there was a poor-to-nothing whistle. I couldn't hear it from the next room when water boiled. Also, I found it ergonomically difficult to pour from due to the angle of the spout. I had to nearly turn the pot upside down to empty water out, a burn risk when dealing with a full pot of boiling water and steam escaping. Again, for the price with such a limited warranty, I think I'll take my chances with something else and return this one.
Bought as a Christmas gift -is a beautiful kettle and nicely proportioned for display on a professional sized range however after following the directions to "prep" kettle prior to use discovered that the whistle did not work and had to return. Have yet to test the 2nd version which was shipped for free but as another reviewer mentioned with a 1 year warranty have some reservations about the over all quality for an item that should last a lifetime. It would be refreshing for Sur La Table extend that coverage considering the items price tag.
