How to Serve Caviar

By Anina Giannini, @lechefswife

Ingredients

Serving caviar at home does not need to feel intimidating. With the right tools and a few classic accompaniments, you too can serve caviar like a professional. Caviar is an elegant way to elevate any gathering, from holiday entertaining to a simple celebration at home.

Caviar should always be served cold and simply. Keep the tin refrigerated until just before serving and place it on a bed of ice once opened. Avoid metal spoons, which can affect the flavor. Instead, use mother of pearl, bone, glass, or high quality plastic spoons.

Classic Caviar Accompaniments
Traditional accompaniments are designed to complement the delicate flavor of the caviar without overpowering it.

  • Blinis or toast points
  • Crème fraîche or unsalted butter
  • Hard boiled egg whites and yolks, finely chopped and served separately
  • Chopped chives or shallots
  • Lemon wedges

For the best experience, taste the caviar first with minimal accompaniments to appreciate its flavor.

Procedure

How to Eat Caviar

Spread a small amount of crème fraîche onto a blini or toast point, then top with a small spoonful of caviar. You can add chives, shallots or the chopped up hard boiled eggs to taste.

Caviar is rich, so small portions are ideal.

Another classic tasting method is the caviar bump, where a small spoonful is placed on the back of the hand and tasted directly.

Caviar is also delicious on plain potato chips or a baked potato.

Pairing Suggestions

Champagne is the most traditional pairing for caviar. Its acidity and bubbles balance the richness beautifully. Vodka is another classic option and should be served well chilled.
