Kuhn Rikon Smart Lid with Auto-Release Valve
Close![]()
Description
Enjoy perfect pan-frying, steaming, braising, simmering and sautéing with this innovative universal lid. A favorite in our kitchens, the Smart Lid features a silicone gasket that seals onto almost any pan and a groundbreaking dual-setting valve that can be set to trap steam in the pan or release it automatically.
When set to automatic, steam builds up under the lid until it pushes the valve open, releasing excess moisture and ensuring crispy-skinned, yet moist fried chicken, mouth-watering pork chops and more. With the valve locked closed, the Smart Lid seals in moisture—great for rice dishes, perfectly poached salmon, stewed and braised meats, or steamed veggies.
Thanks to the unique stepped silicone gasket, the Smart Lid forms a tight seal on almost any pot, making it an excellent alternative to a drawer full of bulky and hard-to-store lids. The clear glass center makes it simple to keep an eye on cooking foods, and the Smart Lid is dishwasher safe for hassle-free cleanup.

Very Innovative
After shopping for replacement lids for my really old stainless cookware whose steam-release valves had all broken, I found this wonderful product! I only needed to buy one to fit my different-sized pots/pans. I LOVE it! Just yesterday, I was making mashed potatoes.....they always seem to boil over and make a mess regardless of my attention....however, this time, I brought them to a boil then completely turned off the heat and left this lid on, which seals itself. The potatoes finished cooking with no mess or spillage! I have not yet washed in the dishwasher, only by hand

Ooops!
I bought this lid because of its features, not reading the reviews that point out that it is not recommended for gas cooktops. Well, I have one, and have used it without difficulty. The thing you have to be careful of is the width of the flame--make sure the flame is totally under the skillet, and does not lap over the sides. If you do this, there is no problem. I only gave it 4 stars because the picture shows the lid being used over a gas burner, so I didn't even think there was a problem. But, I will continue to use it, CAREFULLY!

Great idea that really works!
I was interested in this Kuhn Rikon Smart Lid for myself. When I saw that Sur La Table was offering a two-for-one deal, I ordered right away. (Ordered a quantity of 1, and they ship 2)
Have had the lid for less than a month and have already used it several times on several different pans. Worked like a charm each time.
So glad that Kuhn Rikon can up with such a handy item, and and very happy with the 2-for-1 offer from Sur La Table! Fast shipping, too.

Not very good as I imagined
It's hard to fit my pots and pans because of the place of their handles. Easy to clean but hard to wipe it off because of the silicon materials (not very slippery for dish clothes).
Glass lid is good to look through the inside without open it.

Wished it did what I needed
I have a lid I use that is made for a single pot that has a valve that can be moved for steaming and letting out the steam; I was hoping that this lid would do all that and more for the rest of my pots. I was disappointed that though the switch to open it up didn't pull back the spring so that valve would open all the way. Tried two of these and both had the same issue. Keep the steam in? Yes. Let it out? Sort of.

Good addition to my kitchen
This lid is wonderful. It is the only one I need and I don't have to sort through the pile to find the right fit.

Problem Solver
The lid is worth it just so I have a cover for some of my larger frying pans. The auto steam release feature is a great bonus. The silicone and lid appear to be good quality.

LOVE IT!
I love this lid. I have so many skillets w/o lids that are sized differently and this fits most of them perfectly.

super handy
It's true. Sometimes it is a bother to go hunting for just the right lid. If you keep this one easy to reach, you soon won't bother with the others-- unless you're cooking in more than one pot, that is!

Can use with multiple pot sizes
Does a great job of "no pot boil overs" and keeps cooktops clean. I use on a gas cooktop with no problems and as mentioned in another review, be alert on gas flame setting. I had a plain silicone version, but the glass top provides visibility to cooked item and works so good, I bought two for my daughters as birthday gifts.

WHY would the universal lid NOT be recommended for gas stovetops?
BEST ANSWER: It might be related to the size of the pan related to the size of the burner. The outer edge of the lid is silicone, and most silicone is only heat resistant to 450-500 degrees F. The flame of an open gas burner can hit 3000 degrees F. If your flame comes up the side of the pan at all, the silicone won't stand a chance

Is the plastic in this bpa free?
TO do the buy one get one free...do you order one or 2?
BEST ANSWER: Order only one (1), and they will send you two. A sales rep told me to notify them, after receiving the shipment, if you receive only one. I had no problems, at all.
We have used this lid a couple of times, since it arrived this month, and it works great!

Is this lid slightly dome-shaped, or is it more flat?
BEST ANSWER: It has a very slight dome. Mostly flat. But note: if the handle of your pans come up at an angle so they are above the plane of the top of the pan, this lid will not work well. The lid winds up resting on the handle of anything less than a 12" pan, obviating its multi-purpose feature. On our cast iron pans it is fine because the handles are even with the upper surface.

how can i use the "special offer" deal?
BEST ANSWER: This is a great lid to use with a variety of pan/pot sizes. In addition, there is a valve to allow steam to escape if you like. The only drawback is that it is better to use the lid on electric surfaces as opposed to gas. If the rim overlaps too much, the gas flames could be an issue.

what are its dimensions?
BEST ANSWER: The lid is 12.5 inches in diameter. I use it on my 10” and 12” sauté pans and it works perfectly for those. I have not tried to or needed to use it on any other pans. P.S. I LOVE it! No need for messy spatter screens, with the vent open foods crisp up nicely. It is easy to clean with just hot soapy water in a dishpan! I have given 4 of them as gifts because I like it so well!!! Hope you will too!

What is the diameter of the lid? Have a large, but odd, shaped pan I've been looking for a lid for. Have been using a large cookie sheet just sitting on top...
BEST ANSWER: It's 12.25 inches, outside edge to outside edge - round. Depending on the size of your cookie sheet, this may not be your best choice.

The top knob came off. Is it glued in place or did something break?Anyone else have this issue?
BEST ANSWER: I have not had any problem. Not sure when you bought yours, I purchased about 2 years+ ago. Lid is attached with a round "disk", rubber gasket between disk and glass top, and connected with a screw.

Doh! I took apart the "smart" handle (one bolt holds all the parts together) to clean the inside of the valve - and now can't remember how to put it back together! Anyone have a graphic/schematic that shows how the pieces are re-assembled? Thanks! Kid-Who-Took-Apart-The-Engine-And-Now-Has-Too-Many-Pieces-Left-Over
