Not happy
My husband bought me this for our anniversary and I'm very disappointed in the quality of this Dutch oven. The enamel chips every time it's use, it just looks cheap now.

Just as described!
I needed a larger pot for various soups and stews and decided to try this one. I was hesitant about getting cast iron, but the reviews of cast iron sold me. I received this item very quickly from Sur La Table. It is a pretty pot for the kitchen and the white enameled interior really helps to see whats going on inside. It seems to heat evenly and thoroughly. The handle on the top does get hot, so you have to use a pot holder on all handles. It was a little heavier than I expected (I should have known!), but it is definitely lighter than regular cast iron would be. A great addition to my kitchen!

Not so good
Dutch Oven came quickly as promised and is attractive and light weight as promised. Sadly everything burns on the bottom. I cook with gas and even on the lowest setting half off the burner I could not prevent burning. Price is right and it is light weight and may work well with electric. Would not recommend this.

Beautiful and Functional
I love the 8 qt Sur La Table Lightweight Cast Iron Dutch Oven! It is lovely, heats evenly, is heavyweight without being unwieldy, and is large enough to cook large quantities with room to spare.

When ordering, I was hopeful that this pot would fit my needs; now I'm simply thankful it is as advertised each time I have the pleasure to cook with it.

Works perfectly - Amazing value
I'd priced similar products around and beyond the price being fare more than this pot, the weight is much heavier which I've found takes longer to bring to a full even heat.

I'm shocked at how perfectly it cleans up no matter how high the heat I cooked. I had worried the light colored interior would show discoloration, and it hasn't.

When cooking and experiencing the "burnt/browned bits" on the bottom, which are some of the most flavorful bits, just deglaze and infuse what your making with flavor.

This pot will be forever piece in my kitchen.

My New Go To Pot!
In the oven, on top of the stove - this is my go to pot! I love the lighter weight and that the cooking results are just as great as using the heavier version.

I use a gas range and find both stove top or oven temperatures can be lowered and with excellent results.

The enamel interior cleans great and polishes up like new if I put a mark on it from using a metal utensil with a little bar keepers powder and a soft cloth.

Love, love this pot
Love the big size. I had another cast iron pot with a white interior and it stained after first use. I was pleased that this was not the case with this pot. Clean up was a cinch.

Lovely Dutch Oven
This is just what I wanted. It appears to be much higher quality than the Mario Batelli dutch oven that it replaces. (The MB given me as a gift was purchased at a trendy kitchen shop and it came with a pit in the inside finish. Never was happy with that pan but it was a gift.) The Sur La Table Light Weight is just light enough that it doesn't strain my wrists to lift and handle, but is still thick enough to do what one expects an enameled cast iron pot to do. It is not intended for intense-heat stove-top cooking. For that you should use a metal wok or similar. This is perfect for slow, long cooking stove top or oven, but I've found it does stand up to a full gas burner for browning onions and haven't found it necessary to keep heat lower than I otherwise would. It's great for soups, stews, tagines, et al. One caveat--do not use metal utensils and do use nylon to scrub, not metal. It's lovely enough to be treated respectfully.

PERFECT FOR MY GUMBO!!!!!
I wanted the cooking versatility of cast iron, but couldn't lit those heavy pots any more. I found this and VOILA, my dreams were answered. I made a big ole pot of seafood, sausage and chicken gumbo and it came out better than ever. The porcelain made roux making easier and the cast iron even cooking made for one hot pot 'a gumbo!! Can't wait for the next cold day to try it out on my chili!!!

Thank you, Sur la table! I highly recommend this pot!!! You can feed the entire family from one pot now!!!

Great Gift For My Daughter
I recently went to visit my daughter in New York. She and her husband love to cook so I ordered this 8 qt. cast iron Dutch oven for them. It arrived the day after my husband and I got there. We used it to make so many dinners. She loved the size, versatility, and easy clean up afterwards. It will be so great to make soup in the coming fall months and for their entertaining with their friends for the holidays. And it was on sale!

Can this Dutch Oven be used on a glass top electric stove?
JUDY M on Nov 21, 2014

Is the knob on top also oven safe to 500 degrees F?
Linda F on Nov 21, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Yes, the lid is safe to 500°.
Is the bottom smooth or does it have any ridges? It makes a difference on whether it can be used on my smooth electric cooktop.
George S on Oct 27, 2014
BEST ANSWER: It is smooth. I used it on my glass top range with no problem.
Can the be used on a gas stove?
jane on Nov 24, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Certainly. Both on the stove top and in the oven.
Will it work on an induction cooktop?
A shopper on Oct 27, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Yes! I have an induction burner and it work great, just like all of my cast iron pans.
Is the paint on both the inside and outside of this Dutch oven lead free? (Since it is made in China) I am asking about the Sur la Table brand, red lighter weight enameled cast iron Dutch oven with the light interior.
A shopper on Dec 30, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it's lead free.

Carole M on Oct 27, 2014

Carrie G on Oct 27, 2014
BEST ANSWER: No, this is only available in red.
Are there spike on the underside of the lid?
A shopper on Oct 27, 2014
BEST ANSWER: There are no "spikes" on the underside of the lid.
what is the shape of the 8qt light weight dutch oven?
Howard D on Nov 21, 2014
BEST ANSWER: This Dutch oven is round.
What heat settings on the stove top can I use with this Dutch oven?
A shopper on Nov 22, 2014
BEST ANSWER: That will depend on your cooktop. If you have a gas stove, low is suggested so that the flame doesn't come into direct contact with the enamel. If you have a glass top, nothing higher than medium so that enamel doesn't fuse to the cooking surface.
You say this is good for Chili's, stews, etc. but say it can only be used on low heat on the gas cooktop. We have many pieces of Le Creuset and it is no problem to cook on our gas range. I just bought this for my son and am now concerned he can't use it on his range unless low heat. Is it safe to cook on the gas range like Le Creuset or not?
A shopper on Jan 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I use this Dutch Oven pretty much as I would use a Le Cruset (which I also have). If you had a commercial gas cook top that rates at 12,000 BTUs or higher then maybe I wouldn't crank the gas all the way but most gas cook tops do not run that high so you should be fine even at "high" heat.
I cannot see a picture here, but on Amazon and at your picture at the bottom, appears to be round shape, measurements look oval. So what is the shape, or is there 8 qt. in both? Also is the lid self basting, ridges or anything under side of lid??
Julia M on Dec 4, 2014
BEST ANSWER: This Dutch oven is round. The lid doesn't have spikes.
Would a 12 pound turkey fit in this? Trisha Yearwood used something like this to cook a turkey in and I want to try it. Must have tight lid!
Piper N on Nov 24, 2014
BEST ANSWER: No, this one would not be large enough for a turkey.
Does this come pre-seasoned?
Eviatar I on Nov 27, 2014
BEST ANSWER: It is not seasoned, nor does it need to be because it's enameled.
When I go to check out it says the standard shipping applies, but on the promotion it said free shipping. Can someone help with that?
A shopper on Nov 21, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Type in the code FREESHIP. I just did and it worked.
Can you use metal utensils in this?
Judy H on Jun 18, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Always use wood, silicone or plastic to prevent chipping the porcelain coating on the interior. (ALWAYS)
I have an electic glass top stove. Is this dutch oven too heavy for my glass top?
Christina K on Dec 3, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I have a new induction stove that is also a glass top. This dutch oven isn't too heavy. I also use heavier cast iron pans on my stove. You just need to be sure you don't slide these posts across the glass top as it will scratch.
My Rachel Ray enameled cast iron 5 qt pot just cracked inside and cannot be used anymore. Obviously the enamel was very thin.... only had it a year and loved it. It didn't stain the way the FoodNetwork enameled cast iron pot did. that said, it's all cracked inside and now I'm in the market for a new pot. So my question is, how well does your enamel hold up? Do you know if anyone has had a pot that cracked? Le Crueset is too pricy for my budget and probably too heavy. Your lightweight pot is looking very promising but I don't want to have to shop again in another year.
Grace N on Feb 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have used this pot stove top & in the oven once a week for about 3 months. It cleans very easily, no staining. No cracks or even scratch marks & is super lightweight. It's a fabulous purchase at a bargain price.
What is the diameter of the base?
Vicki O on Nov 23, 2014
BEST ANSWER: This is a mite difficult to answer, as the "bottom" starts to gradually transition to the vertical side. The surface which would touch flat is 8 inches. However, due to the bottom starting to curve up to the sides, you would measure 9 1/2 inches. In other words, if you want to know the surface that would be in contact with an electric stove element, it's 8 inches. For gas, which needs no contact, I would consider the the diameter of the base to be 9 1/2 inches.
Do these dutch oven pots work on induction cooktops?
Rona C on Feb 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, they do.
What are the dimensions? The ones in the specs don't make sense--must be the packaging.
Rina E on Dec 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The specs are true. This is an 8 qt Dutch oven, large and I love using it for stews, chili, soups and I even bake with it! Easy cleaning too!
Does this come in the kiwi or rosemary (green ) color??
A shopper on Dec 17, 2014
BEST ANSWER: No, this only comes in red.
Please confirm this can be used in both the oven and on top of the stove? Thank you
A shopper on Jan 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. I make big pots of soups and stews and this works perfectly and it is so much lighter than my old Dutch oven. My wife appreciates the lightness but it does not sacrifice the beauty of cast iron. Half as light as regular cast iron but cooks and cleans just as well. I gave my old Dutch oven to a friend. Great piece of cookware and well worth the price. Enjoy and feed lots of friends!!
Can this be used on a smooth electric cooktop?
Kristine W on Dec 17, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I have used a similar cast iron oven on an electric glass cooktop. It worked wonderfully but I had to be very careful when moving the oven so it would not scratch. We now have a 5 burner gas cooktop, so no worries. Merry Christmas.
Can this pot be used on a glass top electric range???
Mona D on Oct 12, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, I use it for soup and beef stew. It does a great job. I usually spray it with "Pam' for some other oil but it works great. H. Hanna
Does the Dutch oven work on induction type stove tops?
Ruth U on Apr 26, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. We use it often. Just remember it is heavy. Place and move it gently.
Where is it made?
A shopper on Aug 24, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The dutch over is made in china. It is light for the large size but that makes it easier to handle. Great addition to our other cast iron that is not enamalized.
The description says it can be used to braising which requires high heat. Some comments say not to use high heat. Other brands offer a dutch oven or a braiser. Can this really be used as both a braiser and a dutch oven?
A shopper on Dec 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I find that if I'm making a large pot of pasta sauce that requires long simmering times, the sauce burns on the bottom fairly easy. I have used it for braising and it works fine. The bottom discolors easily, but it's just cosmetic.
