Excellent tool!
I just bought this and it only took a couple of minutes to assemble. The directions are fairly straight forward and come with some recipes as well. I've only tried this with apples to make an apple pie. I've never tried a tool like this before (I'm new to cooking/baking), but I can see myself using this a lot. It would work well for both potatoes and apples and probably other soft-skin fruits or vegetable. Cleanup is also easy. It's such a time saver!

great gadget
This saved me a lot of time in peeling apples for a pie, and there was very little waste. I wish the directions were a bit clearer, and I don't feel that I have quite mastered adjusting this yet, but it was a great purchase, based on a friend's recommendation. I'm sure I will get better with it after a few more pies!

Don't bother
I wanted to use this to make an apple pie for Christmas, but ended up peeling them BY HAND because THIS gadget doesn't come fully assembled and my handy husband spent an hour trying to figure out how to get it together. The written directions are awful, and the video on line doesn't help. I will be returning it for a refund and not buying another one. Very disappointing.

As a wedding gift this is great. The average person would likely not buy this for their own home, but its a mindful gift that will stand out and hopefully be memorable to the recipient.

This tool is not only for apples - it can core, peel and slice any fruit or vegetable that you usually have to peel. I have started canning fruits and vegetables and believe this tool will reduce the prep time in the process.

Can I peel apples without slicing them?
Judith L on Sep 13, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can.
Can the thickness of the slices be adjusted? Thanks.
A shopper on Aug 9, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No, it can't be adjusted.
What is the thickness of the slices?
A shopper on Oct 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Fairly thin, maybe about 1/4" thick. This cannot be adjusted.
will it peel potatoes?
A shopper on Nov 17, 2015
BEST ANSWER: This tool will most definitely peel potatoes (and pears), in addition to apples. It'll
make scalloped potatoes quick and easy!
How do I assemble apple peeler?
A shopper on Nov 23, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It wasn't difficult, however I did You-Tube it which made it very clear. PS I love mine!
Will it "spiralize" zucchini?
Jennifer S on Dec 29, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It might, zucchini is not as dense as an apple. Also, the travel of the cutter is made for the length of apples.
you would need to shorten the veg to match.
Does the suction cup base work well?
A shopper on Nov 28, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It does, we have granite counter tops and once the lever is down it stays put! It also detaches from the actual peeler part of the way so you can make sure you get the whole thing clean and dry!
Does it come with an extra blade and does SLT sell replacement blades?
Debbie C on Nov 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: There was no extra blade with my online purchase.
Does this apple peeler develop any blackish substance on the wheel driver after you've done several pounds of apples for something like jam? That's what happens with a similar peeler. It happens after doing a lot of apples and it gets on your fingers and some apples occasionally. I'm interested in the sur la table version as long as it doesn't develop the same blackish material on the wheel.
Barbara S on Oct 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Mine has not! It's apple season in Marylandd so we've been using it almost daily. Just make sure you wash and dry it completely eveytime so it doesn't get any rust spots!
I got this as a Wedding Gift a few years back so too late to return, but I pulled out finally recently and used it. It's missing 2 parts (the screw to affix the handle and the peeling blade). I can manage too slice and core my apples, but I would also like to be able to peel them as well. Instead of buying a whole new unit (and wasting the unit that REALLY works as a corer/slicer so far) I'd rather pay a few bucks and get the peeler blade piece. Is this possible? And less important is the screw to screw in the handle to the crank - that too I'd like a replacement, though I can make it work just fine with the handle on the crank. Thanks for any leads on replacement parts. Cheers.
Jan S on Jan 22, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Sorry, I'm not in the repair business however may I suggest going to a local hardware store to see if there is a way to get the screw you need. The peeler blade is another issue. You might be able to find a similar unit for sale at a local yard sale, but who knows. Sadly Sur La Table doesn't sell spare parts.
Best of luck!
I have enjoyed using this for years. Most recently, I found the it did not remove the apple peel very well. It would remove the peel for a couple of turns and then miss the peel for a couple of turns, and so on. How can I repair or adjust something to make it work as well as it used to?
A shopper on Dec 5, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It can be readjusted by loosening the screw and readjusting to refit the apple; the problem is that the screw won't stay tight. I have to rebuy this item every 2 years. I've bought it from a number of places and paid different prices, finding that every one, no matter the price, is the same item, all made in China.
Until it breaks or stops working it's great for peeling and coring large numbers of apples. I wish there was an American made one; maybe then it would last longer.
It also should be noted that soft apples make a big mess and are frustrating.
How can I use just the peeler?
