Great for more than just zucchini
I don't have the counter space for a large cranked spiralizer, so I bought a handheld one - the common hourglass-shaped one. I wasn't necessarily looking for a new one when I stumbled across this while browsing the site, but when I saw it, I knew I had to have it/try it because it seemed to account for all the things I didn't like about my other, soon to be former, spiralizer. To that end...

Pros:
- It's actually easier to spiral veggies in this than my other, one. Having a flat surface instead of conical structure for the blades, you can work the vegetable much further down than in my previous one, even without the safety assister cap
- It's not just for skinny vegetables like zucchini and carrots. This was 1 of the 2 main reasons I bought it. In the short time I've had it I've spiralled potatoes for curly fries and even an onion (although this was trickier to do and the bits were harder to get out from between the blades ).
- Clean up is easy (aside from onions) in that a quick tap and rinse dislodges particles. And then a quick swish with a brush/sponge for hygiene.
- It's so compact and easy to store, the other main reason I bought it. For my previous spiralizer, the length and shape made it hard to store in our utensil draw, even for a handheld device. This one, however, tucks nicely into the corner. Also, I love the assister cap snaps onto the top to protect the blades and your fingers during storage.

Cons:
- Compared to other models (handheld or otherwise), there are no other blade options. So you can't vary the thickness of the spirals nor can you julienne vegetables. This isn't a deal breaker for me as I have a peeler that julienne's vegetables for me just fine.
- The spikey nodes in the assister cap don't work well in softer vegetables. In both my onion and one of my smaller zucchinis I found at the cap just turned around mulching the top of the vegetable instead of helping it around. But for me, again, this isn't a deal breaker because unlike my other handheld you can twist almost all of the vegetable down to the surface with your hand without fear of grazing your fingers before any assistance is needed.
- For the above reasons I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could, but the benefits so massively outweigh the negatives, that it seemed a shame to give something less than 5 stars that is a joy to use and so easy to clean and store.

Bottomline, if you want an intro level spiralizer to work with multiple types of vegetables and aren't bothered about having different blade types, then you're on to a winner with this one.

Easy To Use
I opted for a handheld spiralizer because I don’t have the space in the kitchen for anything bigger. This has been such a fun tool to use! I admit I was a little blind to this food trend, but along with this tool I also bought the Inspiralized book and I have had a blast eating healthier.

Handy tool
The spiralized is easy to use and to clean. It makes cooking potatoes, zucchini, etc. faster and lends these vegetables more variety in presentation and ways of use.

Healthy and Fun
I enjoy making spirals with different vegetables. Haven't tried fruit as yet. My favorite veggies to use are zucchini, summer squash and of course carrots. My noodles are pretty with a sauce or plain as a side dish. it's nice to have an alternative of just plain cuttings. Sometimes I can't find veggies wide enough, howerver.
I am doing OK with the hand held spiralizer, but due to some arthritis in my left hand, Ii am thinking I might need the one with the handle. For now it's just great and I am happy to have purchased the OXO Handheld Spiralizer.

Highly recommend this spiralizer!
I read the reviews for this product before buying it and could not be happier with my choice. It's easy to use, doesn't take a lot of time in prep (I kind of thought it being manual would be time-consuming) and it's instant gratification.

Best Peeler ever!
I have purchased this vegetable peeler at least a dozen times over the years. I have two, I have given both of my kids one and I attached one to the top of my gifts at bridal showers. Hands down, the only one to buy

After reviewing this and a larger counter spiralizer, I believe this will meet my needs. I don't have counter space for a larger one. Reviewers also said it was fairly easy to use. I've never used a spiralizer before so I figured I'd start with a basic one first to see if I will use it often.

Is it durable enough for potatoes, turnips, a heavier vegetable?
A shopper on Oct 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it's definitely durable. Just takes a bit more strength to turn denser vegetables.
How does one get the “lid” off the “jar” so that the hand held spiralizer can be of any use t all????? there are three os us, to include an engineer but none of us has been able to get the top off in order to try. this is our third meeting devoted to trying. can anyone help?
so far, we giviy minus makr that MINUS five stars
A shopper on Dec 13, 2017
Is it safe for children to use? About age 10? Thanks.
Joanne S on May 8, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, if the child is adept. The blades are small and recessed into the tool. I very rarely use the "handle," but I also don,t take the potato, etc. down to the nub either. In my estimation, it's safer to use than a mandolin.
