The mounting bar DOES pull apart from the magnetic bar for mounting.
The last person said the screw holes are inside the magnet casing which does not pull apart. But the back of the bar with screw holes DOES pull away from the rest of bar; it's only held there by the magnet inside (which is very strong; be careful you don't catch your fingers between the mounting bar and the full bar when you put it back in place).

Long magnetic bar perfect knife storage
The ultra sharps are no longer hidden away. The great big and the little tiny knives hang happily side by side, safe and ready to hand. I will never use a knife block again.

Bummed
I was excited to replace my old Wusthof life bar with this product. Sur La Table’s magnet looks sleek and easy to clean. I don’t care for its performance though. When I put knives on it, it doesn't hold them securely. The center of the bar, along the entire length, is slightly higher than the rest of the surface, so my 12 inch knives swing like pendulums and never rest perpendicularly. The problem: the rise creates just one contact point for each knife. This shortcoming causes me to question this product’s safety for me as a user and the safety of my knives.

Good product
I knew I wanted a magnetic knife holder for my remodeled kitchen and having used some in the past that were unsatisfactory - magnet was too weak - was tempted by one that cost nearly $100 and is not nearly so attractive I decided to give these a try. They are perfect and by far the most attractive I've seen. Currently holding several heavy knives and some scissors.

No Mounting Directions
You would think mounting this would be obvious, but the screw holes are inside the magnet casing which does not pull apart. There are no directions and googling directions turns up with no results. It's a pain to have to go back to the store to ask them how to mount it.

I shopped several stores, and even though this is a store brand, it is the nicest looking Bar Magnet I could find. Thank you so much
Phyllis B on May 4, 2016
Knives should not be stored in butcher blocks, dulls the knife. Hanging knives in magnetic strips is best for knives. These strips are solid, nice looking and wide.

what size drill bit should you use for the anchors?
A shopper on Mar 4, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I don't have this but, you might do a search, such as "calculating drill bit size for anchors". I did this and found a page with info you could use. I can't post the link here, so you're on your own. If you've never done this, you might get a small piece of drywall - perhaps a leftover at a lumberyard - and practice drilling and inserting the anchor. Good luck.
Has anybody mounted this using 3M Command strips? Would prefer not drilling through tile backsplash if possible.
A shopper on Sep 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: My designer didn't want to drill into the glass tiles of my new kitchen, and convinced me to mount it on a wall with no tile. If that's not an option, you could do that - the knives don't exert that much force when placing them on or taking them off the magnet. I would be concerned about moisture and heat degrading the bond, though. Then again it's pretty easy to just keep re-mounting when that happens.
Do you remove the plastic from the magnet?
Valerie G on Oct 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I installed mine a while ago but I don't remember there being any plastic. So I would say yes.
What is the weight capacity that the bar can support?
A shopper on Mar 24, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Small to medium knives it it fine. But if the blade is skinny or a larger, heavier knife, it must be put upside down to rest on the handle. I've have no problems using this method and is still a great way to show off beautiful knives, increasing counter space.
Can this knife bar be magnetically mounted on the side of a refrigerator?
A shopper on Dec 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, that is what I did with mine.
