Description
Our homemade beef stew starter is the perfect shortcut to simmered-all-day flavor—and it’s ready in just hours. Simply brown the beef, then add the sauce, vegetables, water and red wine and cook for a rich, flavor-packed stew that begs to be spooned onto slices of crusty bread. It can also be prepared in the slow-cooker for an ultra-easy, hands-off meal.

DUTCH OVEN DIRECTIONS:
Set oven to 350° F. Season beef with salt and pepper. Heat oil on medium-high. When it begins to smoke, add beef and brown on all sides, working in batches. Remove from heat. Add all beef, vegetables, starter sauce, water. Stir, cover with foil and place lid on top. Cook in oven for 2 hrs and 45 min. Pour in red wine (or more water), stir, cover and return to the oven for 15 minutes. Let the stew rest 10 minutes before serving.
SLOW COOKER DIRECTIONS:
Instead of roasting, add browned meat and vegetables to your slow cooker and cook on low for 6-8 hours. Add wine (or water) in the last 15 minutes. Let rest 10 minutes and serve.
- l jar Stew Starter
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 3-4 lbs boneless beef chuck roast, cut into chunks
- 1/2 lb carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
- 1 1/2 cups water
- l lb small red potatoes, halved
- 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
