A kettle for the true tea connoisseur.

Description

With over 100 years of experience, Newey & Bloomer are the original British manufacturers of the iconic Simplex Kettle. Thanks to timeless detail, craftsmanship and know-how passed down through five generations, each kettle is a work of art—just as distinctive and authentic as the first models from 1903.

Made from the finest copper available, lined with 100% molten tin and finished with a hand-turned beechwood handle, each kettle is an heirloom-quality work of art that takes over a month to create. The precision-curved spout ensures a perfect pour, and the famous whistle helps to prevent scalding on boiling. Every Simplex Kettle by Newey & Bloomer is proudly stamped with “Made in England.” Available in a copper or chrome finish, this model is designed especially for use with gas stoves.

Simplex Buckingham Tea Kettle
We love our tea kettle. It is our second one, the first lasted at least 15 years. We appreciated Sur La Table having them on sale!. It definitely helps with the price. I would highly recommend this kettle to anyone.

Mostly fine............
So this beautiful stove top kettle works just fine (not difficult for a tea kettle) and has just one flaw; the handle is not copper and the nuts and bolts that hold the handle on are also steel. The mounting "foot" of the handle is rusting. It will still last a hundred years before rusting through but at the price any defect is worth mentioning.

Simplex the best!
I bought my first Simplex 15 years ago, as a new mother, when my last kettle overflowed and doused the flames on my gas stove while I tended my son. I went right out and got this precious darling! It has never failed me and has looked classicly beautiful in 3 different kitchens. I am purchasing its replacement today. Great value for the money!

Not as fabulous as maker would have you believe and cost would indicate!
Though there is big “sell” that kettle is hand wrought, the lid is quite loose, falls off when water is poured and let’s steam escape around the edges. Consequently, whistle does not sing reliably. Is there a solution other than sending back for replacement?

Replacing one I'd had since 1989 because I let it burn dry :( I have a different one that I thought would replace it, but I really miss this one. Boils quickly, whistles cheerily! Needs polishing, though!

I have been advised this kettle has lead inside? Can you confirm if this is the case?
A shopper on Aug 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We are the manufacturers (Newey & Bloomer Ltd) and we have been making the Simplex kettle since 1903 - when we first designed and patented the kettle. All our kettles are 100% lead free. With warmest wishes, Lisa, Newey & Bloomer Ltd, England
I have this teakettle and the interior looks corroded. I use only filtered softened water. Can it be re-tinned? I love the look of it, but am considering a different brand because of the interior problem.
A shopper on Jan 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: If you don't empty out the kettle and dry it, including the lid (it will drip & condensation will cause spots to appear on the bottom of the pot where the water drips down) the pot will look corroded. But it can be re-tinned. Both East Coast Tinning in East Greenwich, RI or Rocky Mountain Retinning in Denver Colorado can do this for you. They are both very reputable companies. You can also elect to have your tea kettle lined in nickel if you prefer, provided you don't have a Nickel allergy. Nickel lined pans last longer and provide more even heat. Monsen Silversmiths in Berkeley, California can do this for you. You will need to google these companies for their contact information because Sur La Table prohibits including contact information or links. I hope this was helpful to you despite the fact that information is missing.
How much does hold?
A shopper on Oct 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It has a 1.9 qt. capacity.
Does it whistle?
A shopper on Oct 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It whistles...but very quietly. I needed one that would alert me from afar. I've had a Buckingham for 40 years, but apparently the manufacture or process has changed...I don't know. When I needed a new one, I went to Sur la Table. It didn't put out much of a whistle, so I took it back and told them it didn't whistle like my old one...and I tried another one. It ALSO didn't have much of a whistle...so I returned it. I am heartbroken to be without mine because it is the loveliest kettle out there. Depends on how loud you need it, I guess. You might try it and see if it's good enough for you. My house is pretty big and I needed it louder. Good luck!
Hi! It says the kettle can only be used on a gas stove? Not possible to use on both electric and gas?
A shopper on Dec 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This model can only be used on gas stoves. The other model that they have available without the bottom ring is fine for both gas and electric.
I have this tea kettle and this inside has rust. Is this common or could it be the age of the tea kettle?
A shopper on Feb 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Do you use filtered water, and do you empty the pot completely after each use?
I have had my kettle for many years. It seems the inside is getting rusted. Is this defective or does that happen with age?
A shopper on Feb 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Tin is the lining of choice for teakettles because it not allergenic, doesn't rust, & can easily be refurbished/re-tinned, at a very reasonable cost compared to other metals. Most likely what you are seeing is not rust, but is the copper from the pot itself where the tin lining has worn down.Tin is a thin material & will normally wear out over time & normally lasts only a few years even if you take really good care of it. However to ensure it will last as long as possible follow the manufacturers recommendations: use filtered water to prevent scale build up, never use abrasive materials to clean your kettle, they were specifically referring to the outside of the kettle but this is true of the lining as well. You can actually just rinse out the tea kettle since you are only boiling water in it & then dry it with a soft cloth. When you want to descale the interior of the pot they advise to use a non acidic de-scaler & not to be tempted to use vinegar or lemon as they are both very acidic. If you do wash the inside of your kettle with dishwashing detergents on occasion be sure the one you use doesn't contain trisodium phosphate and/or metasilicate as tin is reactive to these ingredients. They also caution that these kettles are made to be used on a medium flame because copper heats quickly & prolonged, unnecessary high heat will damage the tin lining. However rather than re-tin your pot you might want to price out the cost to have all of the tin removed and plate the interior with a nickel lining. It will be more expensive but nickel is very durable and will last for up to 30 years. I was about to purchase this kettle in the copper finish but found it in the chrome over copper finish lined with nickel. Apparently another retailer had the manufacturer make it to their specifications, so I opted for that model instead for this very reason. interestingly the copper model was still lined in tin so be sure to discuss this with the plating company. It is worth refurbishing.
How does the handle do after a boil? Does it get hot enough to warrant a heating pad or mit?
A shopper on Dec 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No. It is a wooden handle & does not get hot.
