Description

SPECIAL VALUE The serrated edge of this knife makes it ideal for slicing foods with somewhat tough skins and soft interiors—such as tomatoes. But it’s also perfect for a multitude of small tasks where more precise cuts are needed, like trimming vegetables and slicing.

Shun Classic’s tasteful and contemporary design features a beautiful Damascus-clad blade and D-shaped ebony pakkawood handle. Behind the knife’s beauty is function: a razor-sharp blade offering precision performance.

Shun Classic knives feature a core of proprietary VG-MAX super steel clad on both sides with 34 layers of Damascus stainless steel. The woodgrain pattern of the steel allows the blade to slide easily through food. The result is a knife that’s sharp, durable and corrosion resistant, as well as beautiful to behold.

NSF-certified knife meets the high-level safety standards for professional kitchens.

Best all around utility knife
I have owned this knife for probably six years, and I just bought another one for my mom. I routinely buy this knife and the small 6 inch ""mini-cleaver"" by Shun as wedding presents. Why? Because with those two knives, you don't need any others.

This knife has serrations which make it perfect for fast, easy, no-pressure slicing of tomatoes, peppers, herbs, cantaloups, rolls, etc, and it is great for peeling and segmenting citrus. It's long enough that it slices a sandwich and short enough to cut the peel off an orange. My mother has a painful nerve condition in her hands and she reports a lot less pain using this knife because it requires so little force to use. The blade stays sharp, like most Shun knives will for years, the serrations give it some ""grip"" and the handle feels right in your hand when you use it. The serrations conveniently seem to reduce your chance of cutting yourself, too, as you have some warning from the teeth before you're about to slice into your finger.

It's a precision tool and does require just a little consideration. Like any kitchen knife you care about, you can't run it through the dishwasher. Since it has a wooden handle, you shouldn't leave it laying in water, and it will rust-spot should water stay on the blade for a long time (think multiple days - and the rust spots will scrub off with a little effort and the scratchy side of the sponge). Otherwise I can't think of anything at all negative.

I cannot say enough good things about this knife. It's great, you won't be sorry

"You say tomato, I say tomatoe"
Years ago I had a Henckels tomato knife that was much smaller. It cut a tomato, but not much else. Over the past few years, I have been replacing my first loves with Shun knives because the Shun D handle fits my hands and the blades are much sharper.

This a great sandwich building knife. Love the sharp point for coring tomatoes and it is gentle enough to shred lettuces and strong enough to cut through the sandwich of different densities: think: BLTs or ham and swiss. Lovely addition to my addiction

Fabulous
Love my 7 inch serrated knife. Perfect for all kinds of vegetables. Works with ease with arthritic hands.

great knife
Had a similar one that disappeared...a touch smaller. But, just like pots, you can cut small with a larger knife, hard to cut big with a small knife. I got this in the height of tomato season and am so happy with it.

Love the ease of slicing tomatoes!
OMG! This knife goes through tomatoes like butter. Especially without squishing them or crushing them like so many other knives. My favorite knife for tomatoes or anything else requiring clean slices through something soft.

A more knowledgeable knife snob
As a person who was convinced that serrated edges were the refuge of the cheap edge, I had eschewed such, except for the (cheap!) expendable utility knife. I was astonished to see a Shun(tm) serrated product, on special no less, so I tried it. The knife it replaced is now demoted to opening packages... it may be that the serrations are compensating inadequate technique on my part, but no matter; it's a scary-sharp tool that I would recommend to any tyro. Pros? Curious...

Favorite and most used of all my knives!
Such a versatile knife...for fruit, veggies, bread, etc! I have purchased 3 for gifts, and all were much appreciated. I have never sharpened it...unlike my other Shun knives, which I do love...but they don’t stay super sharp for as long as I would like. Definitely a 5 Star knife!

Can this knife be sharpened ?
A shopper on Aug 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This is a great knife. You can get all your knives sharpened by the Shun distributor located in Portland Oregon. It takes about two weeks to mail them in and get them back. I have done this only once because the knives stay so sharp if you take care of them properly.
