I have always placed the stone in a cold oven, turned the oven to 450 degrees for 30 minutes, then started baking pizzas. I use a pizza peel to transfer the pizzas on and off, and when I'm finished, I turn off the oven and let the stone stay in the oven overnight until completely cold.
This way, the stone never touches a cold surface while hot, and handling of the piece is only done once at the beginning and once at the end--both while the stone is cold, as one would put away a delicate platter after use. That said, accidents do happen, and just as with platters, stones fall and break. I have my very first metal/tile pizza stone that looks like a puzzle--after cracking into dozens of pieces during a move, I continue to use it broken, because tiles are tiles and they can't slip off because of the pan's edge. The stone above would need to be discarded and replaced if it were to break. I hope this is helpful. LJ

I love this stone. Make sure you heat your oven to 400 degrees or so before you place anything on it or it will crack
Use it dry or sprinkle ground cornmeal on it before placing pizza for the New York feel
Enjoy!
