"Accurate thermometer, read out difficult to read"
I thought I found the perfect candy thermometer. It was easy to clip on pan and
accurate but I had a difficult time viewing the
digital readout. I kept seeing the 888 numbers and had to stoop down to find
the temperature reading. The display shouild
be on the top edge of the thermometer not
on the side

Fine for things under 250 Degrees
Fresh out of the packaging I had to change the batteries. Ok, no problem. Read out was clear and the clip was handy. But the first time using the thermometer it became clear that it is totally not made to withstand high heat. The clip loosened right away and I had to hold the top of the thermometer so it would stay upright. Then at 250 degrees the screen went from clear to unreadable (and yes I used the heat shield that was included). It did still beep when the desired temperature was reached. Unfortunately it wouldn't stop beeping and wouldn't turn off. It went right in the trash

Broke on second use
DO NOT BUY
I burnt a batch of caramels because this thermometers reader froze at 242 degrees. Even when removed from the caramel it still read this temperature. This was the second time using it, the first day I bought it. Very disappointed with this purchase.

Very disappointing!!
I bought this specific thermometer because it was highly recommended by a blogger I follow for her homemade caramel recipe. I followed the recipe instructions exactly and watched the thermometer like a hawk, and watched in horror as my batch of caramels burned beyond redemption because this thermometer was completely inaccurate. What a heartbreak! Waste of ingredients and my time. Gave the recipe a second try the same day and used my basic cook's thermometer. Although I almost burned my hands (short stem), my regular thermometer worked fine, proving that this item is in fact defective. Returned it and will be buying an old-school candy thermometer instead. Seriously, don't waste your money.

Bundt cake thermometer
Not worth the inaccurate and annoying hassle. A toothpick is still best.

My thermometer is off by 4 degrees. How is the digital thermometer calibrated?
Does it beep on reaching lower temperature?
I want to use this thermometer for making yogurt, where the milk is heated to a higher temperature, and then cooled to a lower temperature to mix with the starter. Can I set the thermometer to beep as it is cooling and reaches the lower temperature as well as when it is warming and reaches the higher temperature
I want to use this thermometer for making yogurt, where the milk is heated to a higher temperature, and then cooled to a lower temperature to mix with the starter. Can I set the thermometer to beep as it is cooling and reaches the lower temperature as well as when it is warming and reaches the higher temperature
BEST ANSWER: I bought this thermometer, and yes, it does beep on reaching a lower temperature, but....The manual says it beeps once when it reaches 3 degrees below the set temp, twice when it reaches the set temp, and 3 times at 3 degrees above the set temp. What it ACTUALLY does, is beep once PER SECOND when it is within the range of 3 degrees below the set temp to 1 degree below the set temp. When it reaches the set temp, it will beep twice PER SECOND between that and 2 degrees above the set temp. It then beeps 3 times PER SECOND when it is 3 degrees or more above the set temp. If it is within any range for more than a minute, the beeping stops until it enters a new range. So once it reached the higher temp I had set to warm the milk (175 F), I would reset the temp to the lower value (115 F). I would then need to press the mode button to have it read the new set temp, and press it several more times to cycle around to the manual temp again (it has several preset temps for meat and candy). It would start beeping immediately 3 times per second, as it was now more than 3 degrees above the set temp. If I pressed a button to turn off the beeping, it would not beep when I reached the lower temp. So I have to let it beep for a full minute until it shuts off by itself, and then let it sit quietly while the milk cooled down. When it reached the range from the set temp to 3 degrees above the set temp (118 F), it would start beeping again, now twice per second. If I wanted to be persnickety about it, I could make my set temp 112 F, and then it would start beeping when it reached 115 F as it cooled down (3 degrees above the set temp). So while it's not quite ideal, it does do what I want, and I'll keep it and recommend it to others. This will make my yogurt making a lot easier

Can you calibrate this thermometer?
BEST ANSWER: Put thermometer in a pot of boiling water and hope for a reading of 212 dgrees. If Therm registers 210, you know you have to compensate for the two degrees (short). Therefore if the desired temp is 300 degrees, you would need to stop when the thermometer reaches 298 degrees. If 210=212, then 298=300 (but is not 100% exact). For my purposes, this estimate works for me.
