What you will learn
Do you miss Julia Child as much as we do? Then please join us for a celebration of her influence on American food through a special collaboration with Vital Opera and Sur La Table.
We have teamed up with Vital Opera, a dynamic young opera company dedicated to exploring the intersection between life and musical drama, to present this special and joyous demonstration of Julia’s life, love, and cooking. With a roster of accomplished singer-actors and artists, Vital always presents engaging and compelling programs of music-theatre.
Our birthday party will begin with a look at the esoteric recipes of Leonard Bernstein's "La Bonne Cuisine," performed by Barbara Paterson, soprano and Wei-En Hsu, piano. After they perform, Sur La Table Resident Chef, Joel Gamoran, will demonstrate classic cooking techniques by preparing two of Julia Child's most beloved recipes and the dishes will be served as the celebration continues. The culmination of the program will be Lee Hoiby's 1989 musical monologue, "Bon Appetit!" featuring mezzo soprano, Ellen Graham as Julia Child, and Wei-En Hsu, piano. Guests will watch an operatic realization of Julia Child's classic television show, The French Chef, as “Julia” demonstrates the creation of a beautiful chocolate cake. This will be a one-of-a-kind experience and truly the best dinner-and-show around, all thanks to Julia and Vital Opera!
