In 1967, metallurgist John Ulam founded Clad Metals, a small bonded-metals company in Pennsylvania. Ulam had discovered that bonding different metals into a composite enabled better results than the constituent alone could. Awarded more than 50 U.S. patents for bonded metals, Ulam even contracted with the U.S. Mint to make dimes, quarters and half dollars, paving the way for America's conversion from solid silver coins to the bonded, layered ones we use today. For all the precision required of metallurgy, Ulam actually chanced on the discovery that his bonded metals make pretty impressive cookware. An avid home cook, he used a leftover piece of metal to craft a pan for himself. He liked the results so much that he made a few for his friends and then decided to make a few more. He founded All-Clad Metalcrafters in 1971 and began producing bonded cookware for pro chefs and serious home cooks. Today, it's still handcrafted in Pennsylvania with American-made steel-the same way it was four decades ago.
