Is there any difference between the oval cocotte and the coq au vin?

I did a google search for your question and you will be happy to know that several people have had the same question. From what I read it seems as though what they are called has more to do with the knob and what you would cook in the coq a vin than shape or size. Both are oval and and come in different sizes but the coq a vin has a rooster knob and the cocotte has a plain metal knob and since coq in French means rooster/cock it makes perfect sense. But coq a vin is a chicken dish that would be tasty made in either pot. Hope this helps.
